The Top 10 Best Goalkeepers In The World In 2025

The attributes and skill set required of goalkeepers in 2025 has evolved from recent decades. A goalkeepers shot stopping ability used to be the only metric used to measure the capability and quality of keepers.

However as the technical demand of the game has increased, as has the technical pressure on goalkeepers. Most managers look for a goalkeeper who can be instrumental in the build-up play and therefore look to recruit keepers who can play out from the back.

From fancy footwork to saving shots, Football Park looks at who the best 10 goalkeepers in the world are right now.

10 - Matz Sels

Since moving from Strasbourg to Nottingham Forest at the end of the January transfer window in 2024, Matz Sels has become an instrumental player within the Tricky Trees team.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper played a significant role in the club’s qualification for the Europa League last season, playing all 38 league games and recording 13 clean sheets. That was enough to win the golden glove for the 2024/25 campaign alongside David Raya, who also racked up 13 clean sheets.

Sels also made the fourth highest number of saves in the Premier League last season with 120 saves, being the main contributor to his side keeping clean sheets.

9 - Mike Maignan

Mike Maignan had another consistent and impressive season last time out, recording 12 clean sheets in 37 Serie A appearances. The 30-year-old goalkeeper has strengths in every department, with his ability and confidence to play with the ball at his feet an attractive feature of his game.

Maignan is also the starting keeper for France, often being relied upon by Didier Deschamps to be the man between the sticks. Playing at a high level domestically and internationally is what makes the AC Milan goalkeeper one of the best in the world, as not many keepers in world football play at a higher level than Maignan.

The current AC Milan player was linked with a move away from the Italian club, with Chelsea being the team rumoured to sign him. However nothing ever materialised, as Maignan has stayed with the Italian giants for this season.

8 - Emiliano Martínez

After making the move from Arsenal to Aston Villa in September 2020, Emiliano Martínez has established himself as a world class goalkeeper. The 33-year-old has helped the Villans reach multiple European competitions over the last five years, even participating in the Champions League last season.

Martínez has more to his game than just being an elite goalkeeper, as his fiery character can provoke the opposition into making simple mistakes. It’s this ‘win at all costs’ mentality which separates the Argentine keeper from his competitors, as his antics have antagonised players for years now.

His World Cup and Copa America successes are prime examples of this, with Argentina being the beneficiary party from his mind games. The Villa goalkeeper has also won the Yashin Trophy twice, if winning the World Cup and Copa America weren’t enough.

7 - Gregor Kobel

Gregor Kobel is a goalkeeper that perhaps has been flying under the radar, as he’s a man who has had an impressive career at just 27-years-old. The Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper played a key role in his side reaching the 2023/24 Champions League final, and became the first Swiss goalkeeper achieve that milestone.

Kobel was named in the Bundesliga and Champions League Team of the Season’s for that campaign, showing the world what he is capable of. The Switzerland international was kept out of the national team due to Yann Sommer’s participation, however since the latter's retirement Kobel has found himself as the starting goalkeeper.

6 - Yann Sommer

After missing out on the Serie A title by a point last season, it sums up Yann Sommer’s career in a nutshell. The 36-year-old has long been an underrated keeper, failing to gain the recognition to that of his colleagues for most of his footballing journey.

However the Swiss international has proved year after year that he is one of the most consistent goalkeepers in world football. Last season was no exception, as Sommer recorded 13 clean sheets in 33 Serie A appearances, conceding only 32 goals across the whole campaign.

His Champions League performance was excellent as well, racking up seven clean sheets in 14 appearances. It's fair to say that the veteran goalkeeper has been more than a suitable replacement for André Onana.

5 - Jan Oblak

Jan Oblak had another outstanding season last year, as in the 2024/25 campaign the Atlético Madrid goalkeeper was on the receiving end of numerous awards. The Slovenian international won the Best Save of the Year accolade for the 2024/25 season for a superb double save against Real Sociedad.

The 32-year-old claimed a record breaking sixth Zamora Trophy (given to the goalkeeper with the best goals-conceded-per-game ratio in La Liga), surpassing the duo of Antoni Ramallets and Víctor Valdés.

Oblak also kept 15 clean sheets in 36 La Liga appearances last season, conceding just 30 goals across that period. It’s fair to say that the 32-year-old is still able to perform at the highest level despite his age.

4 - Gianluigi Donnarumma

The new Manchester City goalkeeper has been on an upward trajectory his whole career, as when he moved from his childhood club AC Milan to PSG, it was clear that Gianluigi Donnarumma was a special talent.

His reliability and consistency in goal for PSG allowed the Parisians to embark on a first Champions League trophy, as well as win Ligue 1 for a fourth successive season. Donnarumma also captains the Italian national team, with his leadership and communication skills adding extra strings to his bow.

Overall the 26-year-old is one of the best shot stoppers in the world, and with plenty of time left in his footballing career, the Manchester City goalkeeper will undoubtedly etch his name further into the football history books.

3 - David Raya

David Raya has evolved into one the best goalkeepers in the Premier League in recent years, working his way up the ranks to Arsenal. After steady rises in the standard of club football, the 29-year-old has climbed the football ladder, impressing with every team along the way.

Raya joined Arsenal from Brentford on loan for the 2023/24 season, a deal that was made permanent for the 2024/25 campaign. He had to fight for his place for number one with Aaron Ramsdale in his first season, a battle which Raya ended up winning. As expected the 29-year-old has made Arsenal's Champions League squad for their upcoming matches.

In his first two seasons with the Gunners the Spainard won the Golden Glove award on both occasions. Despite failing to win any major trophies with the London based club, Raya has already shown the world his elite agility, reflexes and footwork.

2 - Thibaut Courtois

Thibaut Courtois has played at the highest level now for some time and always delivers on the biggest stage. His most notable performances from recent years include the 2022 Champions League final, where he helped guide Real Madrid to yet another European title.

Despite missing the majority of the 2023/24 season with an ACL injury, and with backup goalkeeper Andriy Lunin excelling in his place, Courtois still played the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund. The Belgian international made some fine saves to ensure his side won the contest 2-0.

Last season the 33-year-old kept 11 clean sheets in 30 La Liga appearances, conceding only 29 goals during the campaign. Now that Courtois has fully recovered from his injury, there’s no doubt that he will continue to excel on both the domestic and international stage.

1 - Alisson Becker

Alisson Becker is currently the best goalkeeper in the world, as he strikes the perfect balance between being a shot stopper and a sweeper-keeper. The Liverpool keeper has been one of the club’s most consistent and reliable players when it comes to quality, very rarely putting a foot wrong.

The Brazilian international joined the Reds in July 2018 for £66.8m, a significant amount of money for a goalkeeper. However he has justified his price tag over the years, helping the Merseyside team win the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup amongst other trophies.

Last season Alisson recorded 10 clean sheets in 28 Premier League appearances, conceding 29 goals during the campaign. The 32-year-old is the perfect example of a modern-day goalkeeper, someone who can not only meet the requirements asked of them, but thrive in that environment.
