These 10 Greatest Moments of the 2026 World Cup Group Stage Will Leave You Thrilled

The World Cup group stage is officially over. So, looking back what were the moments that left everyone stunned. What were the most thrilling moments that we saw in the first stage of the World Cup?

The race for the golden boot

The golden boot race is normally something that is an interesting competition. However, this summer it has been taken to a new level. We have seen the new elites chancing the old for the golden boot.

Messi currently leads the race with 5 goals in his 3 group stage matches. He will just be the favourite to end the tournaments with the golden boot especially with the knockout matches Argentina has.

However, he isn’t alone. The 2 new machines of football are chasing him, Haaland and Mbappe are right on his heal with Vinicius Jr also hot on his heels. It has been a long time since we have seen all the world elites all playing like it at a World Cup and it has made this race very fun.

The Favourites Faltering

There was a common theme in this group stage. Many of the sides that people thought had a strong chance at winning the World Cup had a difficult time. With many of them failing to go 3-0 in their group.

There were only 2 nations that managed this, and it was the finalists from 2022. France and Argentina can be the only sides that would have won every game if they were to win the tournament.

As for the others, Spain, Portugal, England and the Netherlands all at some point failed to overcome the opposition. It was a shock that many of these dropped points came in the first match. While they did recover after, it showed they weren’t unstoppable.

The Dark Horses Failures

Many fans from Europe had one of their nations as a nailed on dark horse. After their strong run in the Euros Türkiye was a side that could have caused damage. However, the only damage that was caused was in the final match.

They opened against Australia and what should’ve been 3 points turned into a nightmare start. They dominated the game and failed to finish losing 2-0. This exact thing happened in the second game and would eliminate them. They would lose 1-0 to a 10-man Paraguay.

However, they didn’t leave empty handed as they finished their tournament with a thrilling 3-2 victory against the hosts.

Messi Breaking Records

Messi managed something that many thought he would do at the end of the tournament. People thought he would break the goals scored record at this World Cup. However, doing it after just 2 matches wasn’t on many people’s bingo card.

After a hattrick in the opening match he was just a goal behind Klose and his record. He would proceed to have the opportunity to level it from the spot. To everyone’s shock his penalty would end wide of the post.

However, he still managed to score and level it. Then later that game he would add a second goal and break the record becoming a history maker. Although Mbappe has his eyes set on this record.

Morocco Outclassing Brazil

One of the first matches of this summer had 2 very heavy hitters face off. It was expected to be a very close match and one that could go either way. While the score ended level. Those who watched the game know the story.

Brazil looked completely outclassed by Morocco. Morocco dominated everything, they were faster, stronger, more direct. Every attack they had looked dangerous. It was shocking to see Brazil being that heavily outclassed.

While this isn’t the Brazil of old, we still didn’t expect a result like this to happen on the opening match day.

The Opening Reds

The opening game is always something special. It sets the mood for the entire competition. However, this summer’s one had a bit of spice to it. We got out first demonstration on the refs for this summer.

While a 2-0 result would be something expected, what wasn’t expected was for us to be treated to 3 red cards in a single game. Let alone all 3 being straight red cards. It was dramatic and out of the blue, perfect for a World Cup.

The Goals

This group stage was an absolute goal fest. Over 200 goals were scored already something that was unheard of. Considering this stat, we have already seen more goals then the entire 2022 World Cup.

We saw 10 games have over 5 goals in them and there was an average of around 3 goals per game in the group stage. We have been treated by the pure number of goals so far and hopefully it will carry on.

Out of the 48 nations that made the World Cup only a single nation failed to score and that was Panama who unfortunately couldn’t find the back of the net.

Columbia Topping the Group

Going into this World Cup people expected Portugal to be one of the best nation at the World Cup. While they have a 40-year-old Ronaldo up front, the midfield should be able to supply surface and dictate the games.

However, what we saw was some very safe and pedestrian play from the middle of the park. Very little chances were made for any attackers coming through the central areas. This caused them to drop 4 points in the group.

This included a draw to Columbia who managed to win the other 2 matches. This allowed them to finish top of their group and send Portugal into a horrible run if they wish to make the finals.

The Neutrals Favourites Born

At every World Cup we see one nation that everyone starts to support. This summer after the first match we had our nation. Cape Verde put up a heroic performance as they held on to a 0-0 draw against the champions of Europe.

They would then manage a 2-2 draw against Uruguay. It was a performance that they almost managed to take all 3 points from. Was yet another performance that captured hearts and showed if you weren’t already following them, you should.

They ended the group stage off with an amazing performance against Saudi Arabia where they confirmed their progression into the round of 32. They will now face the champions of the world, and everyone will be behind them.

Instagram Fame

Before the World Cup started Instagram was already a topic as New Zeeland fullback Tim Payne gained millions of followers after he was found to be the least followed person at the World Cup.

However, all the success he found was instantly overshadowed. After the first game week a certain goalkeeper had the performance of his life. This got interest around him and them Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha gained massive traction online.

He went from a few thousand followers to millions overnight. He currently sits at 17.4 million followers. This is more than some of the greatest to have ever played the game. Truly a thrilling scene to see.
