Three players we would LOVE to see in England’s friendlies

Ahead of England’s Euro 2024 campaign, they have named their provisional 33-man squad for the tournament. This selection includes some young talent, alongside the regulars in the national team, such as Harry Kane and John Stones. England face Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland before the final squad is announced on Saturday 8th June.

Here are three players that we would love to see given the chance to play, ahead of Gareth Southgate’s final decision:

Anthony Gordon

Gordon’s season has perhaps gone under the radar. The Newcastle winger registered his best goal contributions tally in his career, where he scored 11 and assisted 10, in 35 matches. Perhaps more impressively, Gordon managed to score against all of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ this season, only the second player to ever achieve this after Jamie Vardy. We believe that this statistic alone proves that he could be the player to make a difference against the better teams in the Euro’s, such as France and Germany. He deserves his chance on the left, where the likes of Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford have been left at home. If Phil Foden is given more of a central role, Gordon’s only competition is Jack Grealish, who has not exactly set the league alight this season.

Jarrad Branthwaite

Harry Maguire has been one of England’s best players over the last three tournaments, with him and Stones working fantastically together. The breakthrough of Branthwaite has given Southgate some thoughts, as neither Stones nor Maguire have been playing consistently this season. Maguire missed the last four games of the season, and the FA Cup final, through injury, while Stones has only started one match for Manchester City since the end of March.

Branthwaite has been excellent alongside James Tarkowski for Everton this season. He has only missed one game, which was through suspension, since breaking into the Everton team after two games of the season. He has all of the traits to be a perfect centre back to partner either Stones or Maguire. Branthwaite is tall, left-footed, and elegant on the ball. England need to utilise him in the friendlies, as is good enough to start in this England team.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Understandably, a lot of people will not think that Alexander-Arnold is someone that needs to be given a chance in the friendlies, as he is an experienced international for England. However, we think he could be the perfect left-back for Southgate. Luke Shaw has been ever-present for England during Southgate’s tenure, however Manchester United’s left back has struggled with injury all season; his last start coming in February. The likes of Tyrick Mitchell, Alfie Doughty, and Ben Chilwell all missed out on the squad, leaving Shaw as the only natural left back. Kieran Trippier has appeared at left back for the Three Lions, however we think Alexander-Arnold needs to be starting in this position. The two friendlies can give him more experience in that position, as his attacking qualities could be the difference in the crucial matches in the tournament.
