Three Players who had Incredible Premier League Debuts Last Weekend

Not every debut goes to plan, but when they do, the player instantly becomes a fan favourite. Jurgen Klinsmann, Sergio Aguero and Erling Haaland all had memorable Premier League debuts in the past, and while there haven’t been any quite so dramatic as these this time around, there were still a number of impressive performances for the newcomers.

Savinho - Manchester City

Having signed from one of Manchester City’s sister clubs this summer, Savinho made is debut in their opening game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. While he only played the opening 45 minutes, it was enough to see how good he is. He received a knock late in the first half which forced him off at half time, but he terrorised Marc Cucurella who had just come off the back of an excellent tournament with Spain.

After his debut, many Manchester City fans have compared his dribbling style to that of Riyad Mahrez. For a player so young to be already making his mark at a club like Manchester City shows how talented he is. In just a half of football he made three key passes and completed three dribbles, but what is most impressive about his debut is how he got the nod ahead of Phil Foden who was limited to an appearance from the bench.

Savinho was Girona’s best player last season, so it is no surprise that he was given the opportunity to play for Manchester City so early into his career, but the way he went about it, with a mixture of maturity in possession and youthful Brazilian flair was exciting. Certainly one to look out for this season.

Joshua Zirkzee - Manchester United

Moving from the blue half of Manchester to the red half, Joshua Zirkzee had to impress off the bench in his Premier League debut after Erik ten Hag preferred to play without a number nine. The Red Devils hosted Fulham at home on the opening night of Premier League action and it looked as if the game was heading for a draw before Zirkzee popped up in the box to score a late winner with just three minutes left.

He came on around the hour mark along with Alejandro Garnacho but looked a bit lost at times as he tried to link the midfield and attack. He kept on dropping further and further back to try and get involved in the game until eventually he picked the ball just outside the centre circle, switched play and was then picked out in the box by his fellow substitute to poke in the winner.

Zirkzee joined Manchester United from Bologna after the Italian club finished in a Champions League spot last year, an incredible achievement for the team. The Dutch striker scored 12 times last season and is already off the mark in this campaign; he really is an exciting prospect for United.

Dean Huijsen - Bournemouth

Despite an opening day draw, there were a few Bournemouth players who impressed away at Nottingham Forest. 19-year-old Dean Huijsen started at centre-back alongside Illya Zabarnyi after a preseason injury to Marcos Senesi. The Spanish youngster joined the Cherries from Juventus for around £15m this summer and in one game, many are convinced that he will become an elite defender.

At 6ft 5in, he stood above everyone else, winning more aerial duels than any other player in the opening weekend, and the most for a teenager in the Premier League for 10 years. It wasn’t just his aerial presence that impressed however. It was clear that he had bought into Andoni Iraola’s style of play, something that took a while for the Bournemouth players when he originally came in last year. He won the ball high and played out from the back comfortably on a number of occasions.

The 19-year-old only made one first team appearance for Juventus but spent the second half of last season on loan at Roma and impressed under Jose Mourinho, who has tipped him to become a world beater in a few years time. There were fans and journalists alike who were surprised when Juventus decided to sell him but what is The Old Lady’s loss is the Cherries’ gain, and it looks as if Senesi is going to struggle to win his starting place off Huijsen when he returns from injury.
