Which Premier League Club is Closest to the Local Curry House?

Everyone loves a good curry every now and again – in fact, we English love our curry so much that our national dish is an adaptation of a classic Indian curry, the beloved Chicken Tikka Masala.

Moreover, Curry is intimately intertwined with English football culture – when the hordes of fans leave the stadium after a mid-winter game, very few prospects are more attractive than a steaming hot curry and a breakdown of the game with friends and family. It has become something of a tradition, a superstition even, and curry houses and football are now so linked together that some share the name of either their local team or stadium.

But which Premier League football club has the best curry-serving amenities? Which fanbase can find a tikka masala on their doorstep, and which needs to go on a cross-country march for a humble Peshwari naan? Here, we list teams from furthest to closest, and the results may shock you.

20th. Brighton - 2,730 metres

Sorry, Seagulls. Your talent scouting programme may have no equal in the Premier League these days, but your post-match food scene is in dire need of improvement. With the AMEX-based a considerable distance outside the city of Brighton, Seagulls fans must embark on a 2.7 km, or 43-minute walk, to reach EVES FLAVOUR SRI LANKAN CURRY SHOP, by which point they'll probably be closed anyway.

19th. Manchester United – 820 metres

Shockingly finishing in the relegation zone, Man United are staggeringly far removed from a local cuzza for a side in the centre of England’s second-largest city. Though a number of fish and chip shops stand significantly closer, the nearest major curry joint is Aadam's Authentic Grill and Kebab Shop, a solid 16-minute walk from the Theatre of Dreams. I’d just get a fish and chips instead …

18th. West Ham – 780 metres

A far less surprising entrant at the bottom of the list, West Ham’s London stadium is based in the middle of the 2012 Olympic Park, where outlet stores and fast food joints are non-existant. The closest, called Ghara – The Home of Indian Street Food, is based right next to Stratford International Train Station, taking between 14 and 17 minutes by foot. Still, at least you get to walk through nature to get there, right?

17th. AFC Bournemouth – 650 metres

Another coastal side to make the list, Bournemouth are much more local to their local curry shop than rivals Brighton, but African curry house Wholsa is still a solid 11-minute walk, right on the edge of doable for the average punter with three or four pints in his system.

16th. Fulham – 620 metres

Entering the discussion in a lower mid-table position, it is perhaps surprising that a side in London could be more than 100 metres away from a curry shop, let alone more than 600. However, Fulham is a largely residential area, and as such, the nearest curry front is Kenzita, well on the way to Parsons Green tube station. On the plus side, you get to eat your korma on the tube.

15th. Everton – 510 metres

Reaching a more reasonable distance now, Everton Hill Dickinson Stadium only places this low thanks to its location, namely right in the middle of the Merseyside docks. However, with that being said, the nearest curry house, which goes by the name of Sans Cafe, is still located a respectable 10 minutes' walk away. Anything sub-10 minutes is a win in our books.

14th. Wolves – 440 metres

Oh yeah, we’re in close proximity now – for context, the men's world record time for the 400-metre race is 43.03 seconds, putting into perspective how nearby that is. While no Wolves fans are going to be moving at that pace to reach the Bilash, the nine-minute walk to get there will be all the more pleasant for knowing how close they are.

13th. Sunderland – 370 metres

Similar to their real-life Premier League season, Sunderland are high-flying, sitting well clear of the drop zone here. However, the Saints and Sinners takeaway loses points for the fact that despite being significantly closer than Wolves to their local, it takes more time, with an enforced 10-minute walk thanks to various residential dead-ends.

12th. Manchester City – 310 metres

Outclassing Man United as extensively off the field as on it, Man City fans truly don’t have far to go if they are craving a vindaloo. Though Mary D’s Beamish Bar may not be your typical curry shop, it serves a wide range of Indian fan favourites, and with Man City themes everywhere you go, it has also become a ritual location for Cityzen fans, both pre-kick-off and post. The seven-minute walk doesn’t hurt either.

11th. Aston Villa – 300 metres

Taking the final place in the bottom half of the table, Villa fall just 10 metres short of a top-half finish. Nevertheless, the Star Cafe and Grill restaurant represents a strong showing, with a menu boasting burgers, pizzas and pies, as well as, of course, various types of curry. No Villa fan can complain about the six-minute walk when you consider what awaits them.

10th. Newcastle – 290 metres

One of the strongest contenders on the list when it comes to sheer density of curry restaurants – Indonesian, Chinese and Indian cuisine all lie within 500 metres of the stadium – Magpies fans are spoilt for choice. The closest, named Chilli Padi, sits just under 300 metres from the centre circle of the pitch, equating to a four-minute walk. Toon fans, pick your poison.

9th. Brentford – 280 metres

The opposite to Newcastle, Brentford are starved of purpose-built curry houses within a kilometre of their stadium, a far from ideal scenario for hungry matchgoers. However, George’s Cafe, just five minutes from the ground, poses as a saving grace, serving a classic chicken on a simplistic menu that will take every football fan back to their childhood. Sometimes simplicity really is best.

8th. Chelsea – 240 metres

Unlike Fulham, Chelsea are a London club with plenty of curry locations to offer. However, the nearest location is actually within Fulham Broadway tube station and is none other than the chain restaurant Wagamama’s. This may sound like cheating, but they serve plenty of curries in there, and with the restaurant a three-minute walk away, Blues fans will certainly be more inclined to stomach the slightly more pricey food. They support Chelsea, after all.

7th. Nottingham Forest – 210 metres

Sandwiched between Nottingham Forest’s City Ground and Trent Bridge Cricket Ground lies Indian Express, a popular stopover for fans of both sports. Serving every type of curry under the sun and sitting just three minutes from the stadium, it is every regular matchgoer's dream. However, getting there first presents a different issue.

6th. Arsenal – 200 metres

It is not just in the Premier League that Arsenal are starting to feel the heat – their local curry scene offers plenty of spice as well. With the Hornsey Road roundabout boasting three separate Jamaican food joints, the curry opportunities, while unusual when compared to Indian, are limitless, and just under a three-minute walk from the stands is the perfect place to escape Arsenal’s inevitable bottle job of the Premier League title.

5th. Crystal Palace – 160 metres

With South London often cited as the home of the fast food shop, the Eagles were never going to be far from their local Indian, and with the Arthur Waite stand a literal one-minute walk from Yau’s Oriental Delight, Palace fans couldn’t be better placed. Arguably, they wouldn’t have had enough time to decide on what they were having by the time they got there!

3rd = Leeds and Burnley – 150 metres

Our first tie of the list, and it sees a shock top-four finish for both Leeds and Burnley, making up for their newly-promoted status with a prime choice of curry lodges. Leeds boasts Noi’s Thai Kitchen, while Burnley’s local Park View Chippy offers an extensive array of delicious dishes. With both a one-minute walk from the ground, you wouldn’t want to be working at either during post-game rush hour.

1st = Tottenham and Liverpool – 140 metres

Impossible to be any closer without being inside the stadium itself, the curry houses near Anfield and the Tottenham Hotspur stadium are perfectly positioned to get the best of post-game business. Both grounds sit under 150 metres away from their nearest curry house, although Spurs, being in London, boast a better variety within a slightly wider circle. On the other hand, Liverpool have guaranteed their Premier League survival, so potato, potato.
