Top 10 Fastest Hat-Tricks in Football History

A hat-trick is arguably the greatest accolade a player can earn in a 90-minute football match. Three goals, the match ball and a huge boost towards three points is enough for anyone to walk home happy.

But whilst many many players have scored three goals in a match before, not many have been written down in the record books for having done it in such rapid succession.

Football Park is going to dive straight into a list featuring those who have scored a hat-trick the quickest, counting down the top 10. Without giving too much away, there are certainly a few familiar names in the mix.

10. Sadio Mané (Southampton vs Aston Villa)

Here’s a man who needs no introduction - but we’re going to give you one anyway. Sadio Mané is one of the Premier League’s greatest ever wingers, after winning a Golden Boot and many other trophies with Liverpool.

But this hat-trick came whilst he was playing for his former club Southampton, as he netted three against Aston Villa in a Premier League match back in May 2015. The trio of goals occurred within just 176 seconds and is now remembered as one of the most famous hat-tricks of all time.

9. Joel Pohjanpalo (HJK vs IFK Mariehamn)

Joel Pahjanpalo isn’t the easiest name to remember, but he is a man to have scored a 162-second hat-trick back in April 2012. Since then he has also played across Germany and Italy, for clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, Venezia and now Palermo.

However, Pahjanpalo was playing for his homegrown club HJK Helsinki at the time of the treble, in their season opener against IFK Mariehamn. The Finnish international was only 17 years of age at the time which makes the achievement all the more impressive.

8. Ian St John (Motherwell vs Hibernian)

Not many people will remember this hat-trick, as it happened almost 70 years ago in 1959. Ian St John netted three goals past Hibernian in the space of just two minutes and 30 seconds whilst playing for his beloved Motherwell.

The Scottish striker soon moved on to Liverpool, where he spent 10 years between 1961 and 1971 and tallied up over 300 appearances in Merseyside.

7. James Hayter (Bournemouth vs Wrexham)

James Hayter’s 141-second hat-trick is one of the more recent ones on this list, as he buried the three late goals against Wrexham back in February 2004.

The game was played in the old Division Two at that time, which is equivalent to League One or the third tier. The game ended 6-0 to the Cherries on the day and it’s fair to say both clubs have been on a rollercoaster journey since.

6. Jimmy O’Connor (Shelbourne vs Bohemians)

A fierce rivalry between two Dublin-based clubs actually hosted the sixth quickest hat-trick of all time in November of 1967.

Jimmy O’Connor was the culprit, as the Shelbourne striker netted the swift treble in just two minutes and 13 seconds against bitter rivals Bohemians. Fast-forward to as recent as this decade, the club have put up a plaque at their Tolka Park to honour the achievement.

5. Abdul Hamid Bassiouny (Egypt vs Namibia)

On the road to World Cup qualification in 2001, Abdul Hamid Bassiouny netted a hat-trick for Egypt as they contested Namibia. These three goals happened to be scored in just 117 seconds of each other, meaning they were all within the space of two minutes.

The Egyptian’s hat-trick helped his nation to emerge as 8-2 victors in the tie, although unfortunately they still did not qualify for the tournament. Ironically those three goals were the only three Bassiouny ever scored for his international team as well.

4. Eduardo Maglioni (Independiente vs Gimnasia y Esgrima)

Fast hat-tricks must be down to a striker’s instinct and Eduardo Maglioni is just the example. The Argentine is most memorable for the time he spent at Independiente, where he managed to grab a plethora of goals.

However, the most iconic three goals he ever scored for the club all happened within just 1 minute and 51 seconds of the same game. Maglioni scored this treble in March 1973, whilst he was playing against Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata.

3. Tommy Ross (Ross County vs Nairn County)

Like surname, like team. Tommy Ross spent the majority of the early 1960s playing across Ross County’s front force and grew quite the goal-scoring reputation up in the Scottish Highlands.

Amongst these years and selection of goals, Ross fired in a 90-second threepeat against Nairn County in November 1964. The goal stood as the record holder for fastest hat-trick for many years and Tommy Ross went on to play for several teams across England, including both Peterborough United and Wigan Athletic.

2. Magnus Arvidsson (IFK Hässleholm vs Landskrona)

It is fair to say that Magnus Arvidsson is certainly not a name known to many football fans, despite his two Sweden caps and lengthy spell in German football.

However, one moment in his career that has got his name circulating was the 89-second hat-trick he scored back in 1995. With less than 30 seconds needed for each goal, Arvidsson clocked this against Landskrona whilst playing in the Swedish second tier for IFK Hässleholm.

1. Alex Torr (Rawson Springs vs Winn Gardens)

The English Sunday League is renowned for its freak moments and extraordinary stats. Whilst it is also not even a semi-professional standard, this record is far too astonishing not to top the list.

Alex Torr scored four goals for his club Rawson Springs, as they beat Winn Gardens in the Meadowhall Sunday League back in 2013. The remarkable part is that three of his goals were scored in a 70-second period, which earned the talisman recognition from the Guinness Book of Records.
