Top 5 European players out of contract this summer

With the transfer window fast approaching, clubs across Europe will be looking to bolster their squads with high profile talent. Nowadays, great players usually cost an arm and a leg, however there are some players who are out of contract in the summer and so could be on the move for free. One obvious example is Kylian Mbappe, who looks set to join Real Madrid, but here are five others who could be next season’s biggest bargain.

Jorginho (Arsenal)

Arsenal’s Italian midfielder is certainly past his peak, but at 32-years-old, he still has a couple more seasons at the highest level in him. The Gunners signed him from Chelsea in January 2023, and he has proven to be a good squad player for Mikel Arteta’s men in both the Premier League and the Champions League. However, we have seen that the Arsenal boss can be ruthless with the way he dealt with the goalkeeping situation at the start of the season, and he seems set on a midfield three of Declan Rice, Thomas Partey, and Martin Ødegaard, meaning that Jorginho is surplus to requirements. That being said, there has been talk over the last few days about the possibility of the Italian extending his stay at the Emirates, so this is one that we should certainly be keeping an eye on.

Raphaël Varane (Manchester United)

Raphaël Varane’s time at Manchester United has been far from smooth. Plagued by injuries and poor team performances, the Frenchman has been unable to recapture the form he had at Real Madrid which had made him arguably the best centre-back in the world. When Manchester United signed him for £41 million in July 2021, there seemed to be no doubt that he would perform at Old Trafford. Manchester United’s poor results over the last few years are really not down to Varane, as he has been let down by numerous factors at the club that are way beyond his control. At 31-years-old, he still has a bit of time to rediscover his game, but it looks as if neither him nor Manchester United want to extend his contract, and so he will most likely be on the move in the next few months.

Anthony Martial (Manchester United)

The second Manchester United inclusion on this list, it seems strange that Anthony Martial is still contracted to the club, despite fans calling for him to leave for the last three years. The Frenchman has been anonymous this season having not been included in a matchday squad since he started in United’s embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth. The striker exploded onto the scene as a teenager for Monaco before joining his current club in 2015 for an initial £36 million. For the first few seasons at Old Trafford, Martial seemed like a good signing however this is now his fourth year in a row without scoring 10 goals. The last time he did that was in the 2019/20 season, in which he managed 23 goals in all competitions. Martial even went on loan for the second half of the 2021/22 season to Sevilla, to try and find some form, however he was unsuccessful and has been largely forgotten about by manager Erik ten Hag ever since. Out of contract in the summer, Martial will be hoping to find a club with whom he can get regular game time and show people why Manchester United fans were so excited about him nearly 10 years ago.

Adrien Rabiot (Juventus)

Their French player in a row, Adrien Rabiot is out of contract at Juventus in the summer, having signed a one-year extension in June 2023. The six-foot three-inch midfielder, who joined the Italian giants from PSG in 2019, has enjoyed a solid season this year, scoring four times and contributing three assists. Rabiot has even captained the side on a number of occasions this season, adding another string to his bow. Manchester United have been long term admirers of the Frenchman and look keen to capture his signature in the summer, however they will have to fight off competition from other Premier League clubs as well as potential suiters from Europe. Either way, it seems certain that Adrien Rabiot will be one to keep on the radar over the next few months.

Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)

One club man, Marco Reus recently reached an agreement with his boyhood club, Borussia Dortmund, which would see the German midfielder leave for free in the summer. Reus has only played for two other clubs in his career, leaving the Dortmund academy for Rot Wiess Ahlen in 2006 and then moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2009. Reus rejoined Dortmund in 2012, and hasn’t looked back since, scoring 168 goals in 424 matches. This season however, he has struggled for game time and, at nearly 35-years-old, looks as if a move away from the limelight is on the cards. It will be sad to see him go, but he still has the chance to win a major honour with the club, as Dortmund currently lead PSG in the Champions League semi-final. He couldn’t could he?
