Top Five Longest Major Trophy Droughts In The Premier League
After Newcastle United’s victory over Manchester United on Sunday, they finally ended their 70-year wait for a major trophy. The Magpies had long held the unfortunate title of having the longest drought in English football by some distance, but with that win, the record has shifted.

There are still some huge clubs on the list who are still desperately waiting to lift their next piece of silverware. So, with that in mind, Football Park ranked the top five longest major trophy droughts in the Premier League by the number of days since their last triumph.
It’s also worth noting that there are currently five Premier League clubs who have never won a major trophy, so we’ve left them out to keep things fair. For the purposes of this list, we’re counting the FA Cup, EFL Cup, and European trophies such as the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League as major honours.
Everton, one of the biggest clubs on this list, last taste of major silverware came in 1995 when they defeated Manchester United to win the FA Cup under Joe Royle. While they've managed to avoid relegation throughout the whole of the Premier League era, they haven’t captured a major trophy since the '90s.
However, the tide could be turning as they near completion of a brand-new, state-of-the-art 52,000-seat stadium which looks built for success. So who knows, maybe the Toffies are the next club to take their name off this list.
Arguably the biggest club on this list, Nottingham Forest haven’t won a major trophy since 1990, when they claimed the League Cup for the second year in a row against Oldham. At the time, Forest fans couldn’t have imagined that they would still be waiting in 2025 for their next piece of silverware but little did they know, that victory marked the end of their remarkable run of success under the legendary Brian Clough.

But things could be changing. Forest have experienced a massive resurgence this season and are now in prime position for a Champions League spot, thanks to their new manager, Nuno Espírito Santo.
Next up is Ipswich Town, who's last trophy might surprise a few people. In 1981 the Tractor Boys lifted the UEFA Cup under Sir Bobby Robson which much like Forest, capped off a golden era for the club. Prior to that European cup, they won the FA Cup in 1978.
However, since those glory days Ipswich have endured a sharp decline and have spent most that period without a trophy, outside of England's top division.
It’s nearly 50 years since Wolves last lifted silverware, defeating Nottingham Forest in the League Cup final. Much like several teams on this list, they enjoyed a period of success, winning a few trophies in quick succession. However, since that League Cup victory, they’ve sadly failed to add to their collection.

The record for the longest trophy drought in the Premier League belongs to Southampton. The Saints find themselves with another unwanted record after their one and only major trophy, the FA Cup, in 1976, when they defeated Manchester United under Lawrie McMenemy.
Unfortunately, this season, Southampton are all but guaranteed relegation, which means they’ll be removed from this list next year, making way for a new number one. But, when the Saints last won silverware, they were in the second division, so who knows? Maybe when they return to the Premier League, they’ll leave this list behind for good.
