The Top Under-21 Stars From This Week in Football

Wonderkids make the world go round, and the international break plaguing our screens makes little difference to that.

With every world-class superstar making huge waves on the club and international front comes another wave of exciting young talent from across every corner of the globe looking to be the next one up into the limelight.

The international break has now come to a close with swarms of fans now turning their attentions back towards club football with immediate effect. However, there were plenty of young stars from around the globe that took their international opportunities with both hands and then some.

Every single Wednesday, we at Football Park scour the games that were over the past week or so in football, and identify five talents that shone brighter than many in that time. This week is no different even in the absence of top-flight club footy, so welcome to Wednesday Wonderkids to kick off April!

Tom Iorpenda - 20 - Midfielder (Notts County, England)

We've seen plenty of the same tags for young players down in the lower EFL before, claims that there is 'no doubt' they'll be playing Premier League football one day. These shouts have fizzled out on plenty of occasions, but this talent on loan in Nottingham from Huddersfield may be the real deal to attach himself to those claims.

At the age of 20, Huddersfield Town loanee Tom Iorpenda has been lighting up League Two with an array of glittering performances and fantastic goals. All you need to do is check out his stunning solo strike up above against Cheltenham to get but a taste of the what the Englishman is all about.

Notts County fans have been raving about him amidst their fight for the League Two title/promotion, and rightly so. The Magpies have been a positive proving ground for many on-loan talents in recent years, such as Tottenham starlet George Abbott who wowed fans over the course of last term.

Blessed with a unique blend of poise, attacking threat and positional nous and armed with a deep box of tricks to allude any situation, Iorpenda may be a lower-league star right now, but there is nothing to suggest that he won't be heading far further than that in the near future.

Victor Munoz - 21 - Winger (Osasuna, Spain)

The only issue that Victor Munoz appears to have in his game at the moment is his competition on the right of Spain's attack - it's hard for a wonderkid to make his name, when the ultimate wonderkid in Lamine Yamal is the man in front of you!

Former Real Madrid youngster and current Osasuna starlet Victor Munoz has long been tipped for big things, and this season has been his breakout campaign to kick on and realise those claims. Amidst a domestic season wherein he's helped himself to five goals and two assists, the 21-year-old made his senior Spain debut in their friendly clash with Serbia on the 27th of March.

Coming onto the field in the second half as a substitute, it took Munoz all of nine minutes to register a fine goal on his senior international bow. With Barcelona (who are chasing Munoz) duo Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres combining to send the latter chasing into the right channel, a clever flick found it's way to the onrushing Munoz in the box who made no mistake in guiding a clever finish off the outside of his right foot into the bottom corner for Spain's third of the night.

Spanish fans have been left excited by his all-round play, and his impressive first stint in a Spain shirt has opened the question out as to whether or not the youngster will be on the plane to North America this summer - if this breakout season and impressive national debut is anything to go by, then Spain would be wise to bring him along.

Matviy Ponomarenko - 20 - Forward (Dynamo Kyiv, Ukraine)

This Dynamo Kyiv prospect has been turning heads all season amidst an outstanding scoring run in the Ukrainian Premier League, and Matviy Ponomarenko put his best foot forward to mark his Ukraine debut in a perfect way.

The 20-year-old striker who stands at a lofty 6'3 already boasts eight goals in limited minutes at club level this season, and he earned his first senior Ukraine cap in their play-off semi-final against Sweden on March 26th.

Coming on in the 77th minute with Ukraine 3-0 down to the Swedes, Ponomarenko needed only 13 minutes to thrust his name forward into the international limelight. He got onto the end of a perfect left-sided cross in stoppage time, powering a fine header into the top corner in the 90+1st minute for a later consolation in a 3-1 loss.

In doing so, he became only the fourth Dynamo player to score on his senior bow, which adds to a domestic campaign where he has already chased club records with six consecutive league matches spent on the scoresheet.

Ukraine fans and club higher-ups alike have hailed his unique cocktail of aerial power, hold-up play and clinical finishing. His debut strike was the perfect advertisement for the next potential star of the nation.

Although Ukraine's World Cup hopes have been dashed, Ponomarenko's stock has risen strongly. It won't be long, we imagine, before Europe's big boys come sniffing around this fine talent.

Esmir Bajraktarevic - 21 - Winger (PSV, Bosnia)

PSV Eindhoven's Bosnian-American starlet has been going under the radar this term, despite being one of the Eredivisie's most exciting wide threats across the division this term. However, Esmir Bajraktarevic turned in a performance of a lifetime during the international break, one that may be remembered forever across Bosnia.

The 21-year-old winger, born in the United States and playing for the country of his parent's heritage, was a pivotal performer as Bosnia and Herzergovina stunned football's royalty. Having already played a full 120 minutes against Wales in the semi-final playoff win, Bajraktarevic went the distance once again last night against Italy, with the 'visitors' down to ten men after an early red card but still leading by one for most of the game.

In the eventual penalty shoot-out, after a lung-busting display that saw him create six chances and complete eight dribbles, the former New England Revolution star, dubbed the "Milawaukee Messi" by some, stepped up for the decisive penalty after two Italian misses to blast a winning spot-kick home under Donnarumma and send fans across Bosnia into pure ecstasy and his nation to the World Cup.

Bosnian fans have dubbed the moment as one for the history books - Bajraktarevic's work-rate, composure and icey-cool finish under the most intense pressure possible have given fans a platform to dream from in North America this summer. At PSV, he's already been showing his credentials and massive potential, but the world learned his name last night.

Moises Paniagua - 18 - Winger (Always Ready, Bolivia)

Bolivia’s latest teenage sensation has been lighting up the domestic scene and earning rave reviews after his January move to Morocco with Wydad, but Moises Paniagua made the world sit up and take notice during the inter-confederation play-offs this month. The 18-year-old winger, still officially tied to Always Ready, produced a pair of top-class performances that kept Bolivia’s World Cup dream alive until it's dying breath.

Brought on around the 59th minute in the semi-final against Suriname in Monterrey, and with his side trailing 0-1, Paniagua injected pace and directness into the attack from the immediate outset. In the 72nd minute, he ghosted into the box and rifled home an impressive equaliser low into the far corner, sparking a dramatic comeback in which Miguel Terceros added the winner from the spot seven minutes later. Bolivia ran out 2-1 victors, advancing to the final against Iraq with a spot in the World Cup on the line.

After Luton Town's Ali Al Hamadi had put Iraq ahead in the tenth minute, Paniagua would be on hand once again with a few minutes left of the first half with his second-ever international goal, days after his first, to level proceedings and keep Bolivia's hopes alive. It wasn't to be for the South American side, sadly, with Ayman Hussein netting the winner just a few minutes into the second-half. Result aside, this was still a career-bolstering couple of games for Paniagua.

The teenager’s movement, sharp finishing and composure under pressure drew immediate praise after the break from both manager Oscar Villegas and Bolivian fans. At just 18 years-of-age, Paniagua already has the tools to become one of the hottest Bolivian exports seen in years, with his quick feet and sharp intelligence forcing scouts and punters to sit up and take notice. If he can replicate this level on the biggest stage, a move to Europe’s elite looks inevitable.
