Wednesday Wonderkids - The Top Under-21 Stars From This Week in Football

The conveyor belt of football talent never stops.

In the past week, we have seen some of the game's most exciting talents excel as they put their opponent to the sword.

For this week’s edition, the focus is strict: only players operating in the top five European leagues.

No Under-21 leagues, no academy spotlight. Just five of the best under-21 talents delivering in fully professional, high-pressure environments.

From Ligue 1 to the Bundesliga, the five players on this list stamped their authority for every minute they were on the pitch.

Kevin Danois - 21-years-old

Auxerre

One goal and an 8.3 rating against Metz

The 21-year-old French midfielder, who has had links to Newcastle and Crystal Palace, continued his fine run of form, scoring just his second career goal in a 3-1 win against Metz.

The young Frenchman had a fine game, securing an 88% pass rate, whilst also making two key interceptions within the 90 minutes.

His final act carried the weight of inevitability. In the 89th minute, Kevin Danois gathered Lassine Sinayoko’s pass on the edge of the area, set himself in one smooth motion and unleashed a strike of pristine clarity. The ball arced beyond Jonathan Fischer’s outstretched glove and crashed into the top corner.

The shot had an expected goal (xG) of just 0.06.

AJ Auxerre’s monumental victory over Metz means they have pulled away from Nantes in the relegation zone by three points.

Nobel Mendy - 21-years-old

Rayo Vallecano

One goal and an 8.3 rating against Atletico Madrid

After a turbulent stretch that included a dismissal and a narrow 2–1 defeat to Real Madrid, Nobel Mendy responded in the manner elite prospects must.

The 21-year-old Senegalese centre-back left his poor performances behind as he returned to prominence with a goal and an authoritative 8.3-rated display in Rayo Vallecano’s emphatic 3–0 victory over Atletico Madrid.

Mendy played every second of the game against the Champions League chasing Atletico, seldom putting a foot wrong.

Across the 90 minutes, the promising centre-back delivered a performance built on authority and control. He made two well-timed tackles, provided six clearances under pressure, and was not dribbled past once.

In the 76th minute, with Rayo Vallecano already two goals to the good, Mendy was rewarded for his immense defensive actions.

Rising above his marker to meet Álvaro García’s teasing cross, he powered a header beyond the goalkeeper and effectively extinguished any lingering doubt

Rayan Fofana - 20-years-old

Lens

Two goals and an 8.5 rating against Paris FC

It is time we talk about Rayan Fofana and his outstanding season thus far.

The 20-year-old French forward has spent much of the season making his case in cameos, introduced late, tasked with altering tempo rather than dictating it.

But on Valentine's Day in the city of love, Rayan Fofana authored his own love letter to the travelling Lens faithful.

In the space of just 21 minutes, Fofana stole the hearts of thousands as his two goals sparked a five-star display that felt less like a routine league win and more like a grand romantic gesture, sweeping Lens to a 5–0 triumph—their biggest of the season—and back to perch on the top of the Ligue 1 table.

His first bloomed from chaos. A stray ball was gathered and gently threaded through by Allan Saint-Maximin, an invitation Fofana gladly accepted, striking the ball past Kevin Trapp, sealed with a kiss.

Four minutes later, the romance deepened. Saint-Maxim was found with the ball yet again, playing cupid as he delivered the perfect weighted pass—Adrien Thomasson adding a knowing dummy to complete the triangle of mischief—found Fofana inside the box, guiding the ball past Trapp with tender composure.

Yan Diomande - 19-years-old

RB Leipzig

Two goals and an 8.8 rating against Wolfsburg

Despite drawing 2-2 to Wolfsburg, Yan Diomande reminded the world why he is one of the most sought-after young players in European football.

In his first season in the Bundesliga, the Ivory Coast winger has scored 9 times and provided 5 assists.

His average rating across the season sits at a whopping 7.61, and his current market value sits at £40 million, second only to Warren Zaire-Emery, who has a value £3.6 million higher.

Against Wolfsburg, Diomande once again excelled, scoring RB Leipzig’s first goal of the match in the 70th minute to level the scoreline.

After receiving the ball from teammate Brajan Gruda—who had seized on Kamil Grabara’s misdirected pass—Diomande wasted no time, rifling his shot beyond the outstretched reach of the Polish goalkeeper.

But beyond his goal, the young Ivory Coastian was a handful for the Wolfsburg defence the entire match. He made two key passes, had six successful dribbles, and carried the ball for a total of 236 meters.

Brajan Gruda - 21-years-old

RB Leipzig

One goal, one assist, and an 8.9 rating against Wolfsburg

Mentioned once already in this article, courtesy of his assist for Yan Diomande, Brajan Gruda had an outstanding match against Wolfsburg last Sunday.

On loan from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, Gruda has featured in just three matches for the Bundesliga outfit, but this was the performance that truly announced his arrival.

The young German orchestrated Leipzig’s midfield with authority, crafting three clear-cut chances, completing 30 precise passes, and making four crucial recoveries.

His best moment, however, came in the dying moments of the match as he scored RB Leipzig’s second goal of the match, levelling the scoreline and ensuring the German outfit walked away with a point.

Receiving the ball just inside the box on the turn of the 88th minute, Gruda was left unmarked and had a moment to compose himself before curling a divine strike into the top left corner of the net, leaving Grabara clutching at thin air as he attempted to stop the magnificent attempt.

The midfielder’s goal proved the final flourish of the match, allowing Leipzig to salvage a point and remain firmly within striking distance of the Champions League places.
