What is Going On With The Beckham Family?

The Beckham family are more than used to having the celebrity limelight shone on them. Thanks to their dual fame from former England captain David and pop icon Posh Spice of the Spice Girls, AKA Victoria, the couple have long since adjusted to increased scrutiny and internet fame.

To an extent, this sheer quantity of attention has benefitted them and their family - their fame bore Netflix documentaries, TV opportunities, and endless marketing openings for the infinite lines of underwear, aftershave and coffee that David is always wearing, spraying or making.

However, for the first time in decades, David and Victoria face some controversy - on Monday evening, eldest son Brooklyn launched a scathing attack on his parents, revealing some of the family’s closely held secrets and accusing both his mum and dad of bribing, controlling and, at one point, turning him away completely.

So, let’s get to the bottom of this - what accusations has Brooklyn made against his parents, and how have they reacted?

What Are The Issues Between Victoria Beckham and Nicola Peltz-Beckham?

At around 6pm on Monday, the bombshell dropped - 26-year-old Brooklyn, who goes by the surname Peltz-Beckham after incorporating his wife Nicola’s name into his, posted six stories in quick succession detailing the main reasons behind his long-reported breakdown in relations with his parents.

For a number of years, Brooklyn and Nicola have been absent from Beckham family get-togethers, and of course, the media immediately started cooking up conspiracy theories as to why that was. Well, it’s fair to say that even the wildest conspiracies could not match the hard-hitting truth that emerged last night.

Prefacing the outburst as a build-up of years of mistreatment and forced silence that over time created an impenetrable wall between himself and his family, their eldest son made the bold decision to reveal all, stating, “I believe the truth always comes out.”

With the claims predominantly levelled at his mother, Brooklyn pulled no punches - opening up on his relationship with 31-year-old Nicola, he claimed that both of his parents attempted to sabotage their wedding in 2022, with his mum going as far as to cancel the making of Nicola’s wedding dress at the last minute.

However, according to Brooklyn, the pressure had been building for weeks beforehand, with both David and Victoria seeking to force him into signing away the rights to his name ahead of their wedding date, a decision which the 26-year-old said would have “affected me, my wife, and our future children.”

Brooklyn held out and eventually refused to sign, effectively denying his parents a payday, and because of this, he said, “They have never treated me the same since.”

This led Brooklyn onto discussing the wedding itself, which, once again, was significantly altered by his parents' actions. The night before, Brooklyn revealed a harsh reality: “Members of my family told me that Nicola was ‘not blood’ and ‘not family’”, a statement that only saw tensions worsen, and on the big day, Victoria disrupted the ceremony with an unplanned power move.

Called up to the stage for his first dance with his new wife, Brooklyn instead found his mother waiting for him. In his own words, he said, “My first dance with my wife had been planned weeks in advance to a romantic love song. In front of 500 people, Marc Anthony (the famed Salsa artist), but my mum was waiting to dance with me instead.”

“She danced inappropriately on me in front of everyone. I’ve never felt more uncomfortable or humiliated in my life.” No one except those in attendance will know what Brooklyn means by the inappropriate dancing jab, but it is likely that we all benefit from not knowing.

It was clear that Victoria's actions had an ulterior motive, namely to once again disrespect Brooklyn's wife-to-be and to deny them a moment that most couples cherish for the rest of their lives. Brooklyn's unprompted rant suddenly seems a lot more understandable.

How Did the Beckhams' Relationship Break Down?

However, Brooklyn’s issues stem from long before their wedding day, as the owner of hot sauce brand Cloud 23 said that his future wife had been consistently disrespected long before they put a ring on their relationship.

Once again throwing most of the blame on his mother, Brooklyn said, “My mum has repeatedly invited women from my past into our lives in ways that were clearly intended to make us both uncomfortable.”

Imagine turning up to a family dinner with your new girlfriend only to find your last three exes sitting around the table? I would be equally furious, but in fairness to Brooklyn, he did his level best to rise above it all, as he still attempted to visit his family frequently. However, this would also be thrown back in his face, this time by his dad, David.

In the week that led up to the former Manchester United and England captain’s 50th birthday back in May of last year, Brooklyn and Nicola travelled to London to spend some quality time with his family - however, clearly still raw from the disagreed-upon marriage between the two, David and Victoria instead kept them waiting in a hotel for a week, instead of inviting them into their family activities.

Brooklyn said of the ordeal, “We waited in our hotel trying to plan quality time with him, but he refused all of our attempts, unless it was his big birthday party with 100 guests and cameras at every corner. When he finally agreed to see me, it was under the condition that Nicola wasn’t invited.”

No wonder the dam has finally burst for Brooklyn - obviously, there are two sides to this story, but if even half of these accusations ring true, his stance and subsequent public defence of himself on social media become totally fathomable. If placed in his shoes, any one of us would be raging at the mistreatment and injustice of their family’s behaviour.

Just after his dad’s birthday bash, as his brothers needlessly got involved. Brooklyn stated, “I have received endless attacks from my parents, both privately and publicly, that were sent to the press on their orders. Even my brothers were sent to attack me on social media, before they ultimately blocked me out of nowhere this last summer.”

It absolutely boggles the mind - fixing a relationship with your child is a delicate matter at the best of times, and sadly, David and Victoria have provided a masterclass in how not to approach such a matter.

A One-Way Relationship

However, the head-butting between the family members is not all orientated around Nicola - in one section of his Instagram story, Brooklyn indicated that the only thing his family thrived on was publicity and thrived off the fact that presenting a ‘perfect family’ facade to the world’s media often provided endorsement and promotion opportunities from Mum and Dad.

Differing from his prior accusation, on which very little public information is available, this statement rings absolutely true. You won’t need to think too hard to recall advertising campaigns for clothes, make-up, sportswear and drinks that featured a highly sought-after Beckham face.

Beckham levelled, “My family values public promotion and endorsements above all else. Brand Beckham comes first; family ‘love’ is decided by how much you post on social media, or how quickly you drop everything to show up and pose for a family photo app, even if it’s at the expense of our professional obligations.”

Brooklyn then described the relationship as being a one-way street, something which, given the evidence presented so far, isn’t exactly hard to believe. By his own admission, he has given everything to his family throughout his young life so far, only for his parents to rarely return the favour, and only doing so if there are attached conditions by which he needs to abide.

“We’ve gone out of our way for years to show up and support every fashion show, every party, and every press activity to show our ‘perfect family’. But the one time my wife asked for my mum’s support to save displaced dogs during the LA fires, my mum refused."

In the first page of his social media memoir, Brooklyn says that the purpose of the post is to “tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed”, as clearly there is plenty of dirty laundry that he didn’t have the time or energy to air out. However, on the final page of his account, he once again leaps to the defence of his wife, addressing the long-rumoured falsity that he is controlled by his wife.

“The narrative that my wife controls me is completely backwards. I have been controlled by my parents for most of my life. I grew up with overwhelming anxiety. For the first time in my life, since stepping away from my family, that anxiety has disappeared. I wake up every morning grateful for the life I chose, and have found peace and relief.”

“My wife and I do not want a life shaped by image, press, or manipulation. All we want is peace, privacy and happiness for us and our future family.”

That, in a nutshell, is Brooklyn’s truth. From recurring issues with a wedding-crashing and relationship-altering mother to brothers who, by the order of their own parents, verbally attacked their oldest sibling before removing him from their lives entirely, the first-born Beckham son has not had things easy over the years - it was inevitable that the story would grow too large to stay hidden eventually.

And though it has been less than a day since the dam broke, the reactions of David and Victoria Beckham have already been suitably dramatic.

How Did the Beckhams React?

Reports of the famous parents’ reactions have already started to circulate. Sources close to the family have indicated that Victoria has taken the stunning allegations particularly hard, as she is reportedly “on the floor, shocked to pieces that her son would do this.”

However, according to news outlet JOE, she may be worried about the wrong thing, with one source saying, “She is worried, as is David, that this will be the end of Brand Beckham, with the claims of falseness and pretend relationships; they are worried about what else he (Brooklyn) is going to come out with.”

As for David, he made a public appearance just hours after the allegations were published. Travelling to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where the Inter Miami co-owner was scheduled to appear on a podcast with popular American science author Adam Grant, Beckham put on a brave face and was seen smiling as he sat down for a chat.

However, when Sky News directed questions at him over his son’s outburst, Beckham kept his silence, refusing to drag his family’s public reputation further through the mud. One thing is for sure - their issues with one another are now almost certainly going to be attempted to be settled behind closed doors.

Though some may see Brooklyn’s social media tirade as an emotionally driven but mostly inaccurate rant brought on by the constant pressure of being in the limelight since birth, another source close to the Beckhams validated every word of it.

The source said, “As much as it sounds crazy and unhinged, everything Brooklyn said in his statement is true. It’s on David and Victoria to acknowledge some of their behaviour - they may not want to hear it, but it’s all true.”

“David and Victoria kept trying to push Brooklyn and Nicola apart; they kept doing it. If they love Brooklyn, they have a funny way of showing it. They have had every opportunity to apologise, and they haven’t.”

It probably doesn’t need saying, but this is likely only the start of the drama. With such a great divide in the family, it is unlikely that Brooklyn’s statement is where it ends, and there will inevitably be a reaction from one or both of Victoria and David.

However much his parents would like to blame Nicola for this latest misstep, it appears Brooklyn has finally banished the demons that have shadowed him in every step of his adult life, and now, with a huge weight off his shoulders, it seems that Brooklyn is setting out to build his own name, instead of living within the boundaries dictated by his parents' empire.
