What Does De Gea’s Post on X Mean?

20/07/24 14:40

Is this cryptic post from David de Gea a clue on the Spaniard’s future?

The goalkeeper has been a free agent for nearly 13 months now, after his Manchester United contract expired.

Despite interest from Newcastle and Bayern Munich, amongst other clubs, De Gea hasn’t managed to secure a contract anywhere. At just 33-years-old he’s still a good age for a goalkeeper, especially one who was widely regarded as one of the worlds best just a few years ago.

Although his form declined toward the end of his tenure at Manchester United, most clubs would benefit from signing De Gea and I’m sure he’ll eventually find himself a new home. So which clubs could do with the ‘keeper?

Which clubs need a player like David De Gea?

Manchester City

Okay, okay, just hear me out.

This is probably blasphemy, and I don’t ever believe it would happen. However, with City not against letting Ederson leave the Etihad this summer, signing De Gea on a free would not be a bad move.

City are considering promoting Stefan Ortega to number 1, and cashing in on a 30-year-old Ederson. The other implication of that would be that 38-year-old Scott Carson would become City’s second choice.

With City playing a ridiculous amount of games every year, given they go far in all competitions, David De Gea would make an excellent back-up keeper.

Brentford

This might get some flack from FPL-heads, but I just don’t think Mark Flekken is that good.

The Dutchman is just plain average, he’s of course got some unbelievable saves in him, but he also produces a howler every so often. In fact, Flekken was the lowest rated ‘keeper in the Premier League until February last campaign.

With Brentford looking to avoid being dragged into the relegation battle next season, upgrading from Flekken to former Spain international David de Gea would be a great step in the right direction for Brentford.

Girona

Paulo Gazzaniga was a revelation for Girona since he joined from Fulham, but with the Spanish side looking to build on an eye-watering 3rd place finish, it might be time to upgrade from the Argentine.

Girona were unbelievable last year, and although they’ve lost Savio to Manchester City, they could continue to have success both domestically and in European competition. That being said, they did concede the most goals of any of La Liga’s top seven teams last year.

Should De Gea be able to recapture the form he showed at Manchester United, he’d definitely hone Girona’s defence and help them evolve as a club.
