What Is The Size of a Football Pitch?

If you’ve ever set foot on a football pitch in the UK—whether for a casual 5-a-side kickabout or a full 11-a-side match—you might’ve wondered: how big is this thing, really? Well, you're not alone! The size of a football pitch actually depends on the format of the game being played.

Let’s break it down by match type, using standard pitch sizes in metres.

11-a-Side Football Pitch Size

Let’s start with the big one: the 11-a-side football pitch size in metres. This is the standard pitch used in professional football across the UK and worldwide. According to FA guidelines, an 11-a-side pitch should measure:

Length: Between 100 and 110 metres Width: Between 64 and 75 metres

These pitches offer plenty of space for tactical play, long passes, and those sweeping wing runs we all love to watch.

9-a-Side Football Pitch Size

The 9-a-side football is commonly used in youth leagues, particularly for U11 and U12 age groups.

Here’s what you’re looking at:

Length: 75 to 80 metres Width: 45 to 55 metres

It’s a nice step up from smaller formats and helps younger players get used to positioning and game structure, without the intensity of a full-sized pitch.

7-a-Side Football Pitch Size

Moving down the scale, the 7-a-side football pitch is typically used for grassroots matches, schools, and weekend leagues.

Standard sizes are:

Length: 60 to 65 metres Width: 40 to 45 metres

These pitches are ideal for fast, fluid games that balance space and pace—perfect for working on your close control and quick passing.

5-a-Side Football Pitch Size

Last but not least, the 5-a-side football pitch size in metres is probably the most familiar for casual players and indoor leagues.

Typical dimensions are:

Length: 25 to 42 metres Width: 16 to 25 metres

Compact and high-energy, 5-a-side games are all about sharp reflexes, tight dribbling, and rapid-fire goals. If you're tight on space, this is your go-to format.
