What Makes Frankfurt A Difficult Opponent For Tottenham?
Tomorrow sees Tottenham Hotspur take on Eintracht Frankfurt in a Europa League quarter-final clash. This is Ange Postecoglou’s final chance to win silverware in his second season at Spurs, but Frankfurt will be a difficult opponent for the English side.
Frankfurt have had a successful season so far, and this is thanks in part to their great run of form at the start of 2025. Dino Toppmoller’s side went seven games unbeaten from January 11th to February 16th. They have also won two of their last three league matches and advanced to the quarter-finals of the Europa League in comfortable fashion, beating Ajax 6-2 on aggregate.
Toppmoller’s men have scored 81 goals in all competitions this season, including seven goals against Bochum, and four goals against Holstein Kiel, Heidenheim, Freiburg, Braunschweig and Ajax. A lot of the goals scored in 2024 came from Omar Marmoush, who has now left for Manchester City, but the goals have not dried up in his absence. We know Tottenham have problems defensively and coming up against a free-scoring team could be a real problem.
Frankfurt’s squad is youthful and energetic. The squad boasts the likes of star striker Hugo Ekitike, Elye Wahi, Jean-Matteo Bahoya, Can Uzan and the duo of Germany U21 defenders Nathaniel Brown and Nnamdi Collins. Almost half of Frankfurt’s goals this season have been scored by players under the age of 23, and these goals come from bursts of pace and a high tempo which will certainly unsettle a shaky Tottenham side.
We’ve talked about Frankfurt’s youth success, but a squad cannot be successful without a bit of experience, and not many players are more experienced than World Cup winning goal scorer Mario Gotze. The 32-year-old has done it all, and he hasn’t slowed down in recent years. Gotze has played in six different positions for Frankfurt this season, showing his versatility and his ability to adapt, using his experience to do so. He also has eight goal involvements in his 31 appearances this season. He will certainly be one to watch when the two sides meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tomorrow night.
