What’s Behind Aberdeen’s Rampant Start to the SPFL?

What's Behind Aberdeen's Rampant Start to the SPFL?

Although Aberdeen are one of the most successful teams in Scottish history, not many would have predicted the flying start to the season they’ve endured.

After finishing seventh in the SPFL last season, and losing 16-goal talisman Bojan Miovski to La Liga’s Girona, many fans would’ve expected another slow season in the North-East of Scotland.

That’s far from what’s transpired, and the Dons have won all seven of their games so far this season, why?

Jimmy Thelin’s Tactics

There was some confusion when Jimmy Thelin was appointed as Aberdeen boss, replacing Barry Robson. After 34 days of interim management under Dan Warnock, Thelin was appointed in April but still didn’t arrive in Scotland until June.

It’s safe to say he’s been worth the wait. Aberdeen have endured a perfect start across all competitions this season, and have looked good value for it.

Thelin has stuck to his guns, operating with the same aggressive 4-2-3-1 system he ran at Elfsborg. The side presses in the key moments, looking to win the game through taking advantage of transitional moments, while possession of the ball is mid-turnover.

Aberdeen, again like Elfsborg, spray progressive passes from wide areas into the box in order to create chances. Whilst the opposition is back-footed due to Thelin’s clever triangles forcing a turnover, Jack Mackenzie notoriously bursts forward to cross or release Jamie McGrath into more space.

Key Players

Pape Habib Gueye

This one is also probably down to the influence of Thelin, but that’s not to ignore the player aspect. Pape Habib Gueye, who spent last season out on loan at Kristiansund in the Eliteserien.

Gueye’s performances have made him feel like a new signing this season. He managed a goal every 66 minutes so far before picking up an injury that will likely keep him out for months.

Jamie McGrath

Jamie McGrath looks more vital than ever as he begins his second campaign for Aberdeen. He picked up nine goals and assists in the SPFL last season, and looks like he could dwarf that this season.

His increase in output is probably a result of Thelin’s focus on wide progressive passes, the position where McGrath most frequently operates.

Kevin Nisbet

Kevin Nisbet returned to his homeland this summer, joining Aberdeen on a season long loan from Championship side Millwall.

He’s already had his hand in securing results to ensure the Dons keep their perfect record. The Scot managed a 90+8’ winner on just his second appearance for Aberdeen, and has looked so useful in build up play since. He also added another goal to his tally over Dundee in a 2-1 win.

His form has also earned up a call-up to the Scottish National team.

Can They Challenge for the Title?

It’s yet to be seen just how long this form can continue for Aberdeen. Whilst it’s been a very impressive start so far, we haven’t seen them take on Rangers or Celtic just yet, who are the two real big hitters in the SPFL.

However, Thelin’s side take on Celtic next time out away from home. I think that will be the fixture that will prove just how long Aberdeen can sustain this quality.
