When Do The Serie A Fixtures Get Confirmed?

The fixtures for the upcoming Serie A 2025/26 season were confirmed on the 6th June, with fans able to get a glance at the schedule of their club. The opening weekend of the new campaign will be on Saturday 23rd August, with the timings of games yet to be announced. So when will the Serie A fixtures be confirmed?

How Does The Serie A Fixture Scheduling Work?

In line with other European leagues, Serie A have 20 teams who play each other twice (home and away) across a 38-game season. Clubs will play each other in the first half of the campaign (called the andata) and then again in a reverse fixture in the second half of the season (called the ritorno). Matches are usually played on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, with kick-off times being later in the day. However there are three midweek rounds of fixtures this season.

In previous campaigns the Italian league has usually been the last to announce their calendar for the upcoming season. They also delay the announcements of dates and kick-off times, which makes it difficult for fans to book tickets and accommodation in advance.

However this year Serie A have taken on board feedback from fans, as they were the first out of the five major European leagues to release their fixtures for the 2025/26 season. This saw the first three game weeks given accurate dates and kick-off timings on the 30th June. This will give supporters plenty of time to plan ahead and organise their trips to games. On top of this, the league has set out dates for the announcement of the remaining 35 game weeks, meaning fans will be provided with good notice as to when matches will take place.

Serie A released a statement which further explains how the fixtures will be scheduled, and what the reasons for this are:

“As in the previous season, the 2025-26 Serie A Championship will feature an asymmetrical fixture calendar. The order of matches in the second leg will differ from the first leg, with a minimum of eight matchdays separating home and away fixtures against the same opponent.

“This structure aims to accommodate an increasing number of constraints related to public order, the growing volume of European competitions, local events, and Club-specific needs, while also optimising TV viewership and stadium attendance.”

Factors That Influence Fixture Timing

There are multiple factors that can affect the scheduling of fixtures throughout the season, with TV broadcasting being the main one. TV broadcasting takes place through all 38 game weeks, meaning that it is a constant element that is integral in deciding which teams play when. In Italy, DAZN and Sky hold the rights to show 380 games, with only Sky Business subscribers only allowed to broadcast all games within the Sky family. This results in games being given staggered starting times so that they don’t overlap, meaning fans can watch multiple matches in a day.

Internationally, DAZN have announced they will show every single Serie A match live in the USA, UK and Ireland for the 2025/26 campaign. In past years, TNT Sports had only broadcasted two matches per game week, with the other eight fixtures being able to watch on OneFootball on a pay-per-view basis. However any matches that encroach on the 3pm blackout window in the UK won’t be shown live. Furthermore, broadcasters like DAZN influence the kick-off times to fit their broadcasting schedule, meaning fixtures and starting times of games can be moved to accommodate for their timetable.

European competitions also have an impact on fixture timings, as clubs competing in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Conference League cannot face each other in domestic game weeks that see two back-to-back midweek UEFA rounds. This is done to prevent fixture congestion and to avoid scheduling conflicts that may arise if this rule wasn’t in place.

When Do Changes to the Fixtures Occur During a Season?

There is a difference between the fixtures being released and the games being given kick-off times. This is because when the matches are announced before the beginning of the season, the kick-off times aren’t given with them. Therefore these initial fixtures are given provisional dates, which are subject to change for the reasons stated below.

Changes to fixtures that have already been announced usually occur because of other cup competitions needing to play their games near the time of the scheduled Serie A matches. If these league games weren’t moved, it would either result in a quick turnover of a few days, or even games being scheduled to play on the same day. For obvious reasons that can’t happen, meaning the Serie A games are moved to accommodate other tournaments. These include both domestic and European competitions, such as the Supercoppa Italiana and Champions League respectively.

How Does Serie A Compare to Other European Leagues?

The Premier League released their fixtures for the upcoming season on the 18th June, however only the exact dates and kick-off times for matchday one have been announced.

On the 1st July, the Spanish Football Federation announced the fixtures for the upcoming La Liga campaign. As with the Premier League, only the dates and timings have been released for the first game week.

The governing body for the Bundesliga announced the fixtures for next season on the 27th June, with only the opening game between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig being given a kick-off time.

On the 27th June, Ligue 1 announced their schedule for the 2025/26 campaign. The French league is slightly different compared to the other European leagues, as they haven’t announced any timings for their first round of fixtures. It means Serie A is the only top league in Europe that has announced the dates and kick-off times for more than one game week.
