Where should Aaron Ramsdale go next?
Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been out of favour at the Emirates since David Raya took the number one spot at the beginning of last season. Now, Mikel Arteta is looking at signing a new number two which would mean that Ramsdale’s time in North London is over. Espanyol’s Joan Garcia looks to be top of the list, with the 23-year-old highly rated by the Arsenal boss. There have been a number of clubs interested in Ramsdale but we narrowed it down to three potential destinations for the England goalkeeper.
Despite having Jose Sa in goal, Wolves are in the market for a new goalkeeper. It is uncertain as to why Gary O’Neil doesn’t like Sa too much, but what is certain is that the former Cherries boss is a fan of the Arsenal number two.
The Gunners’ asking price for Ramsdale is around £30m so if Wolves wanted to buy him outright, they would probably need to sell another player. They are still looking for replacements for Max Kilman and Pedro Neto so you’d think that a new goalkeeper wasn’t too important for them. It has been reported that they have made a loan offer with a £25m option to buy next summer but it looks as if Arsenal are not interested.

Recently Emi Martinez has urged Wolves to pursue the deal further stating that he thinks Ramsdale still has a big international future ahead of him. “You need to be where you feel happy” he said, suggesting that the England goalkeeper is unhappy at Arsenal. While I think Wolves would be a good fit for Ramsdale, I think the next club will be even better.
Sometimes it is a step backwards to sign a former player, but in this instance, both Bournemouth and Ramsdale have improved since he left the club in 2020. Ramsdale was Bournemouth’s number one when they were relegated from the Premier League, but before he played a game in the second division, he was snapped up by Sheffield United.
The Cherries’ club captain and number one is Neto, but they are also in the market for a goalkeeper as it appears as if manager Andoni Iraola has grown a bit irritated by the number of mistakes that the Brazilian has made that have led to dropped points. Just last weekend he parried a shot straight into the path of Chris Wood to score. While he is a good shot stopper, he isn’t commanding of his penalty area and neither is his number two Mark Travers.

The one thing that might stop this transfer from happening is the Cherries’ want for a one year loan rather than an outright purchase. They have already bought a ‘keeper in this transfer window; Alex Paulsen was acquired from Wellington Phoenix before being loaned out to Auckland FC this summer. The 22-year-old is highly rated at Bournemouth and it looks as if he will be the number one this season, which means that the club only need a short term solution. The most recent news has linked them to Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga, but if they want a ‘keeper who can command his box, then they're looking in the wrong place.
Southampton are the only team on the list that are really in need of a new goalkeeper, but also the only team on here that probably can’t afford Ramsdale’s fee and wages. The Saints’ number one Gavin Bazunu is out until the new year with an achilles injury and their number two, Alex McCarthy only signed a one year contract extension because of this.
Ramsdale went to Wembley last season to watch their playoff final victory against Leeds disguised as Hagrid, which went viral online. He went to the game because his best friend, David Brooks, was on loan at Southampton and played in the game before getting injured. Brooks has now returned to his parent club, Bournemouth, but I’m sure he would recommend St. Mary’s to the England international.

However recent news suggests that the Saints could be looking at Justin Bijlow from Feyenoord instead, so this could put a halt on their interest in Ramsdale.
This late in the window, it looks as if most teams don’t have enough money to meet Arsenal’s valuation for Ramsdale, so they might have to compromise if they want him off their books.
