Who are the best players out of contract in Europe this summer?

15/05/24 11:17

Whether you are Manchester City or Accrington Stanley, everyone loves a bargain. From Robert Lewandowski’s move to Bayern to Sol Campbell’s move to Arsenal, there have been some impressive free transfers since the Bosman Ruling was introduced. Each summer there is always talk about the whereabouts of out of contract players, and this year is no different. In this article, I will be looking at five of the best out of contract European players who clubs can get their hands on for free this summer.

5.Ben Johnson – West Ham United

Perhaps one of the more quietly talked about out of contract players this summer, Johnson is set to leave West Ham after 17 years at the club. The defender played eight games during the club’s triumphant 2022/23 Europa Conference League campaign but has struggled to hold down a starting place for the team since his breakout season. Rumours point to Rangers as well as several Premier League clubs as the most likely destination for Johnson.

4.Tosin Adarabioyo – Fulham FC

Both in the Championship and Premier League, Adarabioyo has been an important part of Fulham’s backline over the past few seasons. The English centre-back joined the Cottagers from Manchester City in 2020 for just £1.5 million and has since made 132 appearances for the club. After informing Fulham of his decision to leave upon the expiry of his contract in the summer, Adarabioyo has been dropped from the matchday squad for the club’s previous three Premier League fixtures. The player has no shortage of admirers though with Newcastle United and Manchester United locking horns in battle for his signing.

3.Lloyd Kelly – AFC Bournemouth

After an impressive season with high-flying Bournemouth, there is no doubt that Kelly will have many possible suitors this summer. The Englishman has struggled to get a consistent run of games under his belt due to injury, but when on the pitch has impressed in a majorly improved Cherries side under Andoni Iraola. This has led to Juventus FC, AC Milan and most notably Newcastle United wanting his services. The magpies have reportedly put a ‘big offer’ to the defender in hope of luring him to St James Park.

2.Adrien Rabiot – Juventus FC

Following yet another disappointing Serie A campaign for Juventus, Rabiot will be leaving the club this summer. The French International arrived at the Allianz Stadium from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2019 and has been a regular starter for the Old Lady since. However, the club have not yet renewed the midfielder’s contract that expires in June, leaving clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Inter Milan wanting the 29-year-old’s signature.

1.Kylian Mbappe – Paris Saint-Germain

Who else was going to take the top spot? After a seven-year stint in the French capital, Mbappe took to social media earlier this week to announce he would be leaving Paris Saint-Germain upon the expiry of his contract in the summer. The Frenchman has scored a staggering 256 goals in just 307 games for the club and has won the league title in all but one of his seasons in Paris. It seems that the attacker has been linked to Real Madrid every summer window throughout his career, and this year is no different. Although the move has not yet been confirmed, it looks more likely than ever that Mbappe will be playing in all white for the 14-time European champions next season.
