Who Is Sverre Nypan? Norwegian Talent Tipped for City Move

Despite the first of two summer transfer windows having been and gone, Manchester City have already added four players to their arsenal in time for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, with their first match in just under a weeks time against Wydad Casablanca.

Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri was added alongside Lyon’s Rayan Cherki for £31 million each, after magnificent respective seasons individually for their former clubs. This will give City fans a first chance to see how their fresh players fit into the squad in a competitive environment immediately, and if Cherki can live up to the hype to succeed to Kevin De Bruyne, who has just completed his move to Napoli.

Pep Guardiola also sealed two further signings on the first deadline day, with both Tijjani Reijnders of AC Milan being brought in to improve the midfield for £46.5 million, as well as a third-choice keeper in Chelsea’s Marcus Bettinelli on an undisclosed fee- who is also known to be a key figure in the dressing room from his time at Stamford Bridge.

Despite being so busy already, City are set to bring in a fifth summer signing soon, in Rosenborg’s 18-year-old midfielder Sverre Nypan. The youngster has been linked with a large European move for some time now, and Man City look set to confirm his signature in the coming days, as per Manchester Evening News, on a five-year contract for £12.5 million.

The following piece will take you through why The Citizens felt like they had to act so fast in order to secure the deal for one of the hottest prospects in European football.

A Sverre Nypan Player Profile

Sverre Halseth Nypan is from Trondheim, in the South of Norway, and is an 18-year-old central midfielder for Rosenborg, who operates in the Norwegian Eliteserien. He has already played 83 matches so far in his career, and before his move to Rosenborg in 2022 at just 16 years old, he became the seventh youngest player to play in the Norwegian league - aged just 15 years and 10 months old.

In Nypan’s 83 matches, he has registered 16 goals and provided 11 assists. The 2024 Eliteserien campaign was by far the most successful season Nypan has had, and what has made him such a hot prospect. He lit up Scandinavia with eight goals and seven assists in 28 matches, equating to a goal involvement rate of 0.54 per game. This ,from midfield, could be what makes him so appealing to a European juggernaut like Manchester City.

In his career at Rosenborg, the young talent averages a goal or assist every 178 minutes in the Norwegian top division, which is very impressive for a midfielder. The Norwegian U21-international can also operate as a centre-forward or an attacking midfielder. This season, he has featured in nine of Rosenborg’s 11 league matches, scoring once.

Why Might He Be A Good Fit for Manchester City?

Manchester City are the third-known Premier League club to show strong interest in Nypan, after both Aston Villa and Arsenal attempting to sign the midfielder in the past. While the teenager has been used in a variety of roles at his current club, primarily playing as a ‘false 9’ so far this season, the deeper roles are certainly believed to suit him better.

The fact he can operate in different roles makes him an attractive prospect for Guardiola’s side - being able to fit in where needed and whichever position he will grow into more might depend on where Guardiola would like to strengthen and add depth in. His impressive attacking output stats therefore make him a strong option going forward, although he has not played in those advanced positions as often as he does at central midfield.

He also possesses exceptionally high football IQ, whilst being capable with using both feet, and having a strong, smart passing range which could also enable him to slot in neatly into the midfield and play a role in City’s strong build-up play.

Despite Nypan being so young, he has all the tools required to suit Guardiola’s philosophy and he certainly has the potential to help pass out the back to transition defence into attack in a very efficient and effective manner.

If his move to City goes through, he will join the list of top 10 fees received for Norwegian players and become the highest sale for Rosenborg, surpassing that of John Carew’s €8.5 million move to Valencia in 2001. He will also be following the footsteps of Norwegian players before him, such as Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard, to take the massive leap into the Premier League, and if Guardiola can unlock Nypan’s ceiling, the teenage talent could become a future great for Norway and Manchester City alike.
