Who Is The Best Midfielder In The Championship This Season?

The Championship is coming to a close and there are still many teams yet to confirm their status in the division. The title is still undecided, two promotion spots are yet to be confirmed, and the relegated teams are still to be determined.

Here, however, our focus shifts towards the top of the division and the best performers, specifically midfielders as we find out who has been the midfielder this season in our eyes.

Honourable Mentions

We start off with our honourable mentions list, where any of these players could indefinitely be argued to contest at the summit of our thoughts.

Firstly, we give a mention to Leeds United’s Manor Solomon, who has been a staple in the left-midfield in his loan spell from Spurs. He has scored nine times and provided 12 assists, outperforming both his xG and xA, proving well worth the temporary move to Elland Road in the summer. He has also assisted five and scored twice in the past five matches, enabling Leeds to be in prime position to come away with the title after the final matches of the season are played on Saturday- with his contributions being crucial in the result of the game.

Next up, we look down at second place Burnley, and in their midfield, Josh Brownhill. Their captain has been immaculate up and down the pitch this term, scoring 16 and assisting three. He sits just in front of the stonewall Burnley defence who have only been scored on 15 times this season, making 30 clean sheets in that time as they have not conceded more than once in a game. This form has earned them comparisons to that of the 2004/05 Chelsea defence, with even a few spectators saying Burnley’s defence this season deserves more credit than Chelsea’s.

Our final honourable mention is Sheffield United’s Gustavo Hamer. The Dutchman has scored nine and assisted seven however, what is more impressive is how consistently solid he has been in the midfield. He ranks as the third highest rated player on average throughout the season and is first amongst midfielders. He helped the Blades to be in a position to be promoted automatically. Although now, he will have to go through the play-offs to return to the topflight, I do not expect him to stay there if they fail to get promoted.

Who Is The Best Midfielder?

The player who tops our rankings is not actually a part of the top three sides, he plays his football at Ashton Gate, where his team’s excellent form towards the end of the season has put them in a great position to confirm the playoffs. Jason Knight is the man their amazing form relies on and although he’s not the one scoring the goals, he is leading his side on and off the pitch at the young age of just 24.

Knight’s performances have certainly allowed him to lead by example, especially on the defensive end. As you can see below, he has the most ball recoveries in all of Europe this campaign. This is more than some of the world’s best, like Pedri, Bruno Fernandes and Joshua Kimmich. His qualities have allowed Bristol City to always have a chance and keep games close, which is potentially why they have gathered the third most draws this season with 16.

He was named club captain at the end of the previous campaign and will be very pleased that his team were able to push on in the last few matches to earn a spot in the playoffs. At 24 years old, being named club captain comes with incredible responsibility and a lot of pressure- however he has only seemed to shine more in that role than before. He is very experienced, and, as you can see above, he has played over 300 club matches in his career. More than the likes of Bukayo Saka, Charles De Ketelaere, and Kang-In Lee.

He has also played in every minute of every game so far this season. He is one of only eight players to have done this and has done so alongside two of his teammates. By having that consistency in starters would also help the Robins’ chemistry, perhaps helping them to perform regularly and therefore finding themselves in a good position for promotion.

He also ranks second in the division for the most successful final third passes. This shows that even after he has won the ball back, he is effective with the way he then uses it to create opportunities for his team mates. He also leads by example in the engine he has on him, ranking second for distance covered this season, with 367km.

Robins For Promotion?

The Robins currently occupy fifth in the EFL Championship, however, are only one point from Millwall who are not in a playoff position. Their final match is against Preston at Ashton Gate, a team who are fighting for survival themselves and will need to match or better Hull and Luton’s results, while Bristol City need a win to secure playoffs. Should they win their game, they get the “favourable” fixture versus Sunderland which would lead to a one-off match for a place in the Premier League.

The sky is the limit for the Robins who aim for a leap into the unknown of the English topflight and Jason Knight will be the key to lead them to write a new piece of history.
