In the 2025/26 Premier League season, it is likely that the three newly promoted teams could go straight back down to the Championship. But after the first weekend of Premier League games, it could end up being other clubs based on their performance in the opening game and the transfer window they have had.
Relegation from The Premier League is the process when the bottom three teams in the League are forcibly moved down to the second-tier of English football, The Championship. This leaves room in The Premier League for the three promoted teams from the Championship to come up.
The three promoted teams last season were relegated at first attempt. Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester were all relegated in 20th, 19th and 18th respectively. They were all confirmed to be relegated well before the end of the season, with the gap between 18th and 17th being 13 points.

After the first round of Premier League Fixtures; Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United and Burnley all sit in the bottom places currently. This does not reliably indicate who will go down at the end of the season though, as only one game has been played.
However, all three of the bottom teams produced sub-par performances that if replicated over a long period, could lead to relegation.
Wolves were beaten 4-0 at home by Manchester City, West Ham were beaten 3-0 away at Sunderland and Burnley were beaten 3-0 away at Tottenham.
According to QuinnBet, the favourite to be relegated is Burnley with odds of 1.29.
The next favourite is Sunderland with odds of 1.67, and the third favourite is Leeds United with 2.45 odds.
Then Brentford and Wolverhampton Wandererers both sit at odds of 3.25 to be relegated. West Ham United have odds of 4.00 to be relegated.
These odds by QuinnBet could give some indication on who is likely to be relegated this season. These odds will change throughout the season, depending on teams' form.
On paper, Burnley have the weakest squad in the Premier League. They have a quality centre-back in Maxime Esteve and a tidy midfielder in Lesley Ugochukwu, but have a lack of other Premier League quality players.
Their summer transfer window hasn't been the best. Kyle Walker should add some stability at the back, and Marcus Edwards could perform well if he adjusts to the Premier League. But, in our opinion, their transfer window has not been good enough to elevate them to become a Premier League side.
Scott Parker isn't a Premier League proven manager and their performances from last season in the Championship probably won't transfer to the top tier.
Despite an opening win against Everton at home, Leeds didn't cover themselves in glory. They were stubborn throughout the game and only won through a dodgy VAR given penalty.
Leeds still have a Championship calibre squad despite the signings of physical German Midfielder Anton Stach and former Everton marksman Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Daniel Farke isn't a Premier League proven manager. Their home crowd should help them pick up a few wins, but they may struggle away from home and this could be their downfall.
Some of you may be surprised that we have not included Sunderland to be relegated in 18th position. However, we believe that Sunderland have made several shrewd signings that should keep them away from relegation.
Meanwhile, Brentford face a very difficult season. They have lost their manager Thomas Frank, who has kept them steady for many years. They have also lost star winger Bryan Mbeumo, who was the source for many of their goals last season. Also, striker Yoane Wissa seems to be on his way out, which will be another miss in terms of goalscoring output. Dango Outtara and Igor Thiago are decent attacking replacements, but they are not on the calibre of those who left.
Head Coach Keith Andrews has a difficult task ahead for this season, and it would not be surprising if they ended up finishing in 18th place at the end of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
