Why Antony is finished at Manchester United
Signing for Manchester United in the summer of 2022 for around £86 million, Antony arrived at the club with a lot of expectation on his shoulders. When that amount of money is spent, it is expected that you will perform to a high standard. But for Antony that just hasn't been the case.
He has struggled to perform and adapt to the Premier League and now manager Erik Ten Hag would rather start a 19 year old without a start to his name in Omari Forson over him. Now it seems as though Antony may never play for the club again with reports coming out that United are open to entertaining offers for him in the summer. But how has Antony gone from an £86 million talent ready to set the world alight, to potentially never playing in the Premier League again? And what does that mean for Antony going forward?
It all started so brilliantly for Antony. Three goals in his first three games, including a goal on his debut against Arsenal. Everything was looking promising. Despite the crazy price tag maybe he would prove valuable.
But no, he would go on to score just one more goal in the Premier League that season, opening the scoring in a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in April.
Yes he did score a memorable goal in the Europa League Round of 32 against Barcelona, but overall the season was pretty lacklustre. Especially considering the fast scoring start.
This season has not been much better for Antony. He only has one goal in all competitions - that goal coming in the FA Cup against Newport County - and just this past weekend, despite Rasmus Hojlund being unavailable due to injury, Antony failed to start the game against Fulham. To make matters worse he was brought on in the match with just 30 seconds to go. All on his birthday.
Unfortunately for Antony the problem he has faced is that he is incredibly one dimensional. Something you cannot afford to be as a winger in the Premier League. It seems as though he's not particularly quick, he can't take players on, and his left foot is the only foot he can use a lot of the time. Players are able to judge him and know exactly what he's going to do before they have even stepped on the pitch. That being said, it gives Erik Ten Hag little to no option but to not start Antony in his team. Instead opting for a player like Omari Forson, or potentially in weeks to come Amad Diallo.
Fans will continue to celebrate the decision to drop Antony now. It feels like everyone has come to the conclusion that he can't offer anything to the Red Devils and therefore the club may be better off without him. This won't doesn't help Antony turning his form around but that idea is something that is clearly now too far gone. There's surely no hope for him doing anything at the club.
Looking into United's upcoming fixtures I can't see a place where Antony can fit in and make an impact. Especially when the club is going for a top four finish. They need near perfection. Something that Antony can't offer. Ultimately I can't see a reality where he plays for the club again this season.
And with reports suggesting he could be on his way out in the summer - with the club being open to entertaining offers for him. Antony could be leaving sooner than many may have expected around a year ago.
