Why Bradley Barcola's French Firepower will Fuel Liverpool

Barcola's Background

The possibility of Bradley Barcola brandishing the red of Liverpool has become that much more palpable, as the Reds prepare to make a significant bid for the 23-year-old PSG winger.

Barcola has made a real name for himself in European football over the past few seasons. Making the switch from Lyon to PSG for €45m in 2023, after thriving under then‑Lyon manager Laurent Blanc, he has gone on to play a pivotal role in PSG’s treble‑winning 2024/25 campaign and, most recently, helped the Parisiens successfully defend their Champions League title.

At PSG, he has made 152 appearances over three seasons accumulating 39 goals and 37 assists (76 G/A - 0.5 G+A/90).

It's not an exaggeration to say he's a serial winner.

Pace in Behind

Barcola would add a dimension to Liverpool's attack which the club failed to replace when Luis Díaz left for Bayern last summer. And yes, that is the threat of real runners in behind!

Barcola is a two-way dribbler, capable of beating his defender on the inside, but more impressively, has the dynamism and technique to shimmy, leave the defender planted and then burst past him on the outside, using his long-leggedness to stride past.

The signing of Victor Muñoz is likely an attempt at bringing more off the ball runners to the club to accommodate the likes of Wirtz and Ekitike (more ball to feet type players), albeit Barcola is significantly ahead in his development compared to Muñoz.

Winger Versatility

The Frenchman is adept at playing on either flank as he has shown countless times under Luis Enrique in PSG's fluid attacking trio.

Yesterday Andoni Iraola hinted at wanting his wingers to be versatile and multifaceted: "In my previous clubs, most of the wingers have played both sides.

"And even during games we've changed a lot of times the sides of the wingers and I would like now if we can have this versatility, for me it's a big help".

Liverpool haven't had that much needed versatility for a few years now and in the winter period, that versatility could become essential when dealing with injuries and fixture pileups.

Superstar Factor

On top of versatility and pace in behind, the former Lyon man adds genuine superstar quality. He is, undenaiably, a certified freak athlete, able to change games himself with his individual brilliance and problem-solving abilities.

Barcola has had success against English opposition providing an assist at Anfield when PSG cruised past Liverpool. He starred against Man City in Round 7 of the 24/25 UCL, when PSG needed a win to stay in the competition.

The point is he steps up in big moments.

He thrives with cutbacks too and that's something Alexander Isak could very much benefit from given the amount of times he was handed cutbacks whilst at Newcastle. AND Iraola's Bournemouth were notorious for getting to the by-line, be it Milos Kerkez or Adrien Truffert cutting the ball back to an Evanilson or Justin Kluivert.

This transfer promises to be a banger and I myself hope Liverpool submit that bid sometime soon!
