Why is Crysencio Summerville a Brighton Target This Summer?

As reported previously, Fabrizio Romano, who Football Park rate as a tier one source for reliability, has revealed that Brighton & Hove Albion have been in contact with Leeds United over the possibility of signing Crysencio Summerville.

It is understood that the Seagulls will face competition from Chelsea and Liverpool for the Dutch winger's signature.

But who is Summerville? And why are Brighton so interested in him? Especially considering they are willing to go toe to toe with Liverpool and Chelsea over his signature.

Who is Crysencio Summerville?

After coming through the academy at Eredivisie side Feyenoord, Summerville ventured on loan spells with two fellow Dutch clubs before moving to England.

Ahead of their long-awaited return to the Premier League, the then 18-year-old signed for Leeds in a £1.3 million move. Initially, the forward was deployed in the club’s under-21s side, contributing to 26 goals in the two years he spent playing at that level. However, after it was apparent that Summerville was ready to take the next step, he started to be included in the first-team squad on a regular basis.

In his first full top-flight campaign, the Dutch forward recorded six goal contributions in 28 games, including important goals in wins against both AFC Bournemouth and current admirers Liverpool.

Ultimately, the West Yorkshire side were relegated to the Championship that campaign, but this only aided Summerville’s development.

Last season, the 22-year-old recorded a staggering 31 goals contributions in 49 games as Leeds came agonisingly close to returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking. As a result, the Dutchman was awarded the Championship Player of the Year award and has attracted interest from many of the nation’s big hitters ahead of the summer transfer window.

Why are Brighton in pole position to sign Crysencio Summerville?

As well as revealing who was interested in the 22-year-old when talking on the Caughtoffside transfer debrief, Romano also spoke about how Brighton may be helped with a potential deal.

The transfer guru outlined that, even though it is a complicated deal, the Seagulls are helped by the financial fair play situations of other big clubs.

Unlike some of their biggest rivals for Summerville’s signature, Brighton are not in danger of breaching any financial rulings, having sold various players for big money in recent years. As a result, the south-coast side are looking to use this to their advantage and invest big in order to land their man.

Whilst Romano reports that the transfer is still at an early stage, Brighton see signing Summerville as a huge opportunity which has also been approved by new Seagulls boss Fabian HĂĽrzeler.
