Josh Sargent, Norwich City From cult hero to enemy. The transfer saga surrounding Norwich City's Joshua Sargent proves that everything can change in the blink of an eye. More notably, it shows that players have way too much power to abandon a club that gave them the opportunity to make a name for themselves .
The USMNT striker has been heavily linked with a move away from the Canaries in this window, with MLS side Toronto FC the reported pursuers of Sargent. Fabrizio Romano reported that the side had submitted a bid in the region of $18M for Sargent, though Norwich manager Philippe Clement has said that he will not be leaving the club in January. Sargent's response to this, you may wonder? Well, let's just say that he didn't take it very well.

Texting your manager that you can't play because of a transfer rumour is uncanny. Sargent's head is already out the door, and it is hard to blame him with the way that Norwich City have been performing this season. The Canaries sit 22nd in the Championship table, occupying the last relegation spot, though they are just one point off Portsmouth in 21st.
Clement's side knows that they are in a relegation battle, so they will need players to battle and run that extra yard to secure those vital points in the second half of the season. Perhaps a striker refusing to play does not fall under these criteria. Clement has ordered Sargent to train with the U21 side because of his actions - the only say he gets to have, as players seem to make their own decisions nowadays.
Of course, as sagas tend to do, there is a twist. Sargent signed a contract extension with Norwich City in the 2023/2024 season, extending his stay with the club until 2028. In that contract, there was a clause agreed that the 25-year-old could leave for a much-reduced fee if the side were to be relegated to League One. The American has expressed this in his desire to leave, suggesting that he will be doing the club a favour with the fee they would receive. Talk about having high hopes regarding your side's survival chances.
As far as Norwich are concerned, they have no obligation to sell their player unless the fee they value the striker at is matched. The offer from Toronto was a record fee, and by some margin. They had previously broken the bank on the signing of Djordje Mihailovic from Colorado Rapids. The midfielder joined the side in the summer last year for an original fee of $8M (believed to be + $1M in add-ons), the record confirmed transfer fee made by the side based in Canada. It's hard to believe that they could advance much more on their original offer for Sargent, no matter how hard the American pushes for the move to happen.
Sargent, whose family just welcomed their third child, is pushing for a move specifically to Toronto — which he has made clear to Norwich — as he and his family want to return to North America for the first time since he left at 18 to start his professional career in Europe.… pic.twitter.com/6pB4vrRFMH

It is not the first time that Sargent has been linked with a move away from the club, though the reason was very different as to why any deal failed to materialise. Bundesliga side Wolfsburg were keen admirers of the Norwich forward, having made an offer in the region of $20M last summer. While reports suggested that the deal was reaching "advanced stages", the deal was soon off as the player had a personal preference to stay in Norwich. Perhaps we would have failed his medical on a mental note, as I don't know many people who have pleasant things to say about Norwich and the surrounding area.
Prior to this rumour, Sargent had been heavily linked with a move to MLS side FC Cincinnati in 2024, but the two clubs failed to agree on the value for the striker. Now that Sargent wishes to return to North America in the interests of his family, it is hard to see an end to the failed transfer trend as Norwich remains stagnant on their fee for the striker. Perhaps a drop down to League One will teach them a lesson not to be so stubborn in their ways.
Sargent who? While achieving double digits in four consecutive Championship campaigns for the Canaries, this is old news as far as Norwich fans are concerned. 21-year-old forward Jovon Makama has made an instant impact since his move from Lincoln City in August, leaving many looking past Sargent's hissy fit in the background.
Makama already has ten Championship goals to his name in his debut campaign, including the winning goal to secure the three points at Wrexham last time out. The summer signing has scored nine goals in his last eight matches, including a hat trick against Walsall in the FA Cup. He has already established himself as a fan favourite at the club, and his form in front of goal will be vital for his side's survival hopes in the run-in.
A reminder that Jovon Makama is just 21-years-old.

While Sargent has made his intentions clear that he wishes to leave the club, it is looking less likely that Norwich City will sell the striker in this window. Though players can justify their willingness to leave with their actions, whether credible or not, they do not possess the power to physically force the move. We have seen the likes of Peter Odemwingie attempt this before, and we all know how that story ended.
As far as Norwich City fans are concerned, there is no love lost with a striker many used to admire. Some have gone out of their way to line up potential replacements if he does leave the club, though it remains an interesting saga to keep your eyes on as the transfer window nears its deadline.
