Wright Place, Wright Time - How Coventry Exposed Middlesbrough's Biggest Underlying Problem

The most anticipated fixture in the EFL Championship calendar took place yesterday evening, as Coventry defeated Middlesbrough 3-1 at The Coventry Building Society Arena. Haji Wright put an end to his goal drought with a hat trick for the hosts, a result that saw Frank Lampard's side return to the top of the table. A lot can be learned from yesterday's match, mainly that Luke Ayling and Solomon Brynn clearly hate each other. That said, let's uncover where it went wrong for the visitors.

Dismal Defending

It's not often that you see one lump forward result in your striker being through on goal, especially when it comes to two of the best sides in the division. It wasn't just me caught by surprise; the Sky cameras hadn't finished showing a replay before Wright struck for the second time early in the second half. Questions must be asked about the defending on display from both Ayling and Adilson Malanda, both leaving the ball to bounce over them before Wright slotted past Brynn in the Boro net. The following altercation between Ayling and Brynn was much of a "that's your fault, no that's your fault" exchange, summing up a moment of costly defensive disorganization.

It doesn't stop there. Middlesbrough full-back Callum Brittain would've kept the entire stadium onside for the first goal, allowing for Wright to tuck it away at the near post. Though his focus was on guarding Ephron Mason-Clark at the far post, Brittain found himself in no man's land and made the linesman's life a whole lot easier. The chaos at the back continued as Matt Targett was penalized for a handball in the area, no more than a minute after Riley McGree had brought the visitors back into the game. The decision was certainly the correct one, and the celebrations that followed reflected the importance of the result for Coventry.

Playing Out - To What Effect

The high intensity of the press from Coventry was something that Middlesbrough struggled to handle over the course of the game. Whilst they had done such a good job of breaking down Chris Wilder's Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, they played themselves into trouble on numerous occasions in this encounter. Stubborn in their ways, Kim Hellberg's side stuck to the game plan, and they were lucky that Coventry was wasteful on numerous occasions in the final third.

Neat passages of play in the middle only papered over the cracks at the back, the reality being that you will get punished if you keep gifting the ball to the most prolific scorers in the division. The success they did have in playing out was met with missed opportunities, Middlesbrough's Morgan Whittaker having the best of the bunch but failing to capitalize.

Credit to the Sky Blues

A Coventry City side that has received its fair share of scrutiny in recent weeks, having given up their strong advantage in the Championship table. Defeats at Norwich and QPR were followed by a goalless draw against 10 men Oxford United, as fingers started to be pointed at manager Frank Lampard regarding the side's poor form. Quite the reaction to defeat a Middlesbrough side that had won six consecutive league matches, blessed with the likes of Hayden Hackney and Riley McGree as some of the league's best performers this season.

The midfield addition of Frank Onyeka from Brentford looks to be a smart piece of business, the Nigerian impressing on debut. Coventry fans will be delighted to see Wright firing in front of goal once again, having scored just two goals in 19 matches prior to this display. Coventry have now beaten both Middlesbrough and third-placed Millwall in both home and away fixtures this season, warranting their place as league leaders. The Lions remain in hot pursuit for the automatic places, alongside Ipswich Town, who could go within touching distance of the top two if they win both their games in hand.

One thing is for certain: both Coventry and Middlesbrough will be in and around the top come the end of the season. If this fixture were to be seen in the Premier League next season, Coventry fans could be quite hopeful that they'll do the business over their promotion rivals.
