10 Uncapped Players Thomas Tuchel Could Call-Up

04/03/25 14:26

Former Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Paris St-Germain and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel was handed the reigns to officially replace Gareth Southgate on January 1st. Now with his first matches in charge in the Worl Qualifiers in late March, decisions need to be made on who he brings in. With an abundance of talent on offer, we’ll be looking in no particular order on the up and coming stars without a senior cap that Tuchel could bring into the fray.

10 – Jacob Ramsey – Aston Villa

Born in Brum, Jacob Ramsey has progressed all the way through the youth levels with hometown club Aston Villa. He eventually made his Premier League debut in the 2020/21 season, only making it onto the pitch for 13 minutes as part a 0-3 win against Fulham on the road. It took a few more games not in the squad but come the end of the season Ramsey had eventually cemented himself into the first team under Dean Smith. When Steven Gerrard replaced Smith, the then 18-year-old was able to keep his place in midfield. The boyhood Aston Villa fan continued to impress for the next couple of years but unfortunately a toe injury saw that Ramsey missed most of the 23/24 season.

Now fully back, Jacob Ramsey has been showing his usual great performances in a Villa shirt again. This season has seen him play 31 games across all competitions at the time of writing with three goals and four assists, including one goal and two assists in the prestigious UEFA Champions League. The senior squad is destined for Ramsey, and his part in England winning the Under 21’s European Championship shouldn’t go unnoticed. Over all his stints for the national team at youth level the left/central midfield hybrid has 27 appearances with three assists. Thomas Tuchel might end up preferring Ramsey’s club teammate Morgan Rogers who is having a fantastic season but Ramsey could be a valuable asset to have.

9 – Jamie Bynoe-Gittens – Borussia Dortmund

Following in the footsteps of Jaden Sancho, made the move from Manchester City’s youth academy to join German side Borussia Dortmund back in 2020. Since then, he has shot up as one of the best young wingers in the world thanks to his electric speed and technical dribbling. It wasn’t until a year later when Gittens made his first four appearances in the Bundesliga towards the end of the season. The next two seasons were key to his development, getting more and more game time where he is at a point now this season that he has exploded.

The 20-year-old has had a fantastic season so far, netting 11 times and providing four assists in the 36 games he’s featured across all competitions. Four of those goals have come in the UEFA Champions League including against European powerhouses Real Madrid. With Thomas Tuchel having that Borussia Dortmund connections, there is no doubt that he doesn’t know how good Bynoe-Gittens is. Under Gareth Southgate it was usually Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling getting picked for that left winger role but with them major slumps at the moment, now is the chance for Gittens to receive his first England cap, promoted to the senior squad after 11 games with the Under 21’s.

8 – Myles Lewis-Skelly – Arsenal

Breaking into the Arsenal starting lineup due to injuries across the backline, Myles Lewis-Skelly has held his own. He has had to deal with being put into the spotlight at such a young age and has handled himself well. Playing 22 games with the first team, Lewis-Skelly has impressed many fans with how he has been able to fit Arteta’s system like a glove. With England struggling in the left back role in the most recent European Championship and with Kieran Trippier now retired from international football, now is the perfect time to bring in the 18-year-old.

As a left back it is hard to provide goal involvements, but Myles Lewis-Skelly’s only contribution was a vital one at the time. In one of the biggest matches of the season, he was able to get his name on the scoresheet versus Manchester City as part of the 2-2 stalemate a month ago. Defensively and Lewis-Skelly has averaged 2.66 tackles per 90 minutes, winning 1.82 of them over the course of this season in the Premier League. Tuchel could benefit from having a left back that can cover from both the attacking and defensive ends.

7 – James Trafford – Burnley

Another Manchester City academy graduate on this list, James Trafford has been one of the best goalkeepers across all of the 92 teams in the English footballing pyramid. He is a massive part to Burnley’s success this season and was a big part in Bolton Wanderers having the second least goals conceded during their 2022/23 League One season when he was on loan there. Trafford has previously been called up to a senior England squad before but he never achieved his dream of receiving a cap.

Trafford has been like a brick wall in the second half of this Championship campaign. Burnley haven’t let a goal in the back of their net in 12 games at the time of writing. With James Trafford in between the sticks, Burnley’s opponents haven’t scored since Boxing Day. This has led him to keep 24 clean sheets from his 33 games so far, only beaten nine times. Trafford is excellent when facing penalties too, saving two against Sunderland in the closing stages of the game as well as one in the Under 21’s European Championship Final versus Spain to help win the competition. Tuchel has a limited pool of top keepers and Trafford could fall into those places.

6 – Liam Delap – Ipswich Town

Son of former Stoke and Sunderland player and yet another Manchester City youth level player, Liam Delap has finally got off and running. After spending time on loan at Hull City last season he earned a move to newly promoted side Ipswich Town. A £15 million move with potential add ons that could rise to £20 million, the striker has been worth all that money so far.

As part of a struggling Ipswich Town side, Delap has been a shinning star. The Tractor Boys look like they could go back down the Championship come the end of the season, but the 22-year-old has amassed 10 goals and two assists in his 26 Premier League appearances. His physicality has been a great part of his game, showing a completely different style to England captain Harry Kane who will definitely be the first-choice striker. With a change in tactics after tired legs, Thomas Tuchel could use Delap to his advantage, offering a new perspective on the game.

5 – Dan Burn – Newcastle United

Newcastle United have steadily been on the rise after a few poor seasons over recent years, the highlight being them competing in the UEFA Champions League last season, the first time 21 years. Dan Burn has had his influence towards that since his £13 million fee from Brighton & Hove Albion on deadline day in the 2022 January transfer window. Burn is the oldest player in this list but that doesn't mean a call-up would be undeserved.

Versatile in playing both left back and as a centre back, Burn has helped his Newcastle United side achieve eight clean sheets in the Premier League this season, the joint fifth best in the competition. With regular England choices Harry Maguire, John Stones and Ezri Konsa all having missed games through injury this season, they do raise questions about their fitness. If one of them were to be unavailable, Thomas Tuchel could look to the 6”7 unit to be a rock at the back for him.

4 – Elliot Anderson – Nottingham Forest

His move to Nottingham Forest might have been out of control but Elliot Anderson has been a standout player ever since his arrival at the City Ground this summer. With The Tricky Trees shocking a lot of people with their third place in the Premier League and their place in the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup off the back of almost seeing relegation into the Championship last season, Anderson has played a key part in their success.

Numbers wise in terms of goals and assists Anderson has racked up one goal and five assists in the 26 Premier League games he’s partaken in. That might seem low, but the central midfielder has been visually a joy to watch this season. With plenty of older stars in midfield, learning alongside them would only take his game up another gear.

3 – Archie Gray – Tottenham Hotspur

Archie Gray has been someone that Tottenham Hotspur have been able to rely on this season with their extensive injury problems. He has been used in four or more appearances in each of the four positions in the back line this campaign, playing out of his preferred midfield role and still been impressive. He probably didn’t expect to be putting in shift in defence after his was forced to do that as his previous side Leeds United last season, ambitions of being a great “No. 6” after his transfer to the North London club for a Joe Rodon and around £25 million.

In 20 games in the Premier League Gray hasn’t recorded a goal contribution but he has shown fantastic displays in the domestic competitions and the UEFA Europa League. His ability to slot into any of the backline and skill in a defensive midfield role makes him a great option for Thomas Tuchel to have to come off the bench from or maybe even from the first whistle.

2 – Jack Hinshelwood – Brighton & Hove Albion

Handed his first Premier League start back in 2023, Jack Hinshelwood has locked down his place in Brighton’s first team under Fabian Hürzeler. Joining the Brighton & Hove Albion youth setup from the age of 7, Hinshelwood has become the fourth generation to play professionally as his great-grandfather, grandfather and father all had careers as footballers, with his father also playing for The Seagulls.

A knee injury has kept him from featuring in every game but over his 15 Premier League games he has gotten himself two goals so far. He has an incredible defensive work rate which has seen him average 1.93 clearances and 1.17 ariels won per 90 minutes this Prem campaign. Potentially partnered up with Declan Rice, Thomas Tuchel might have found the next midfield duo for years to come.

1 – Aaron Wan-Bissaka – West Ham United

Surprisingly, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has never been called up to the senior England squad before. Since leaving Manchester United for only £15 million, five years after his £50 million move to The Red Devils, Wan-Bissaka has been class for West Ham.

Statistically “The Spider” has been one of the best right backs in the league. Per 90 minutes in the Premier League he has averaged 2.68 shot creating actions, 3.15 progressive carries, 1.72 successful carries and 1.76 interceptions. All of those stats see him in the 90th percentile in comparison to all the other fullbacks in the league. Thomas Tuchel could bring in Aaron Wan-Bissaka in one of the most competitive positions in the England setup. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Ben White and Kyle Walker would normally start over him but all four of them have shown injury concerns, leaving a spot available for the 27-year-old to make his first cap.
