A$AP Rocky is Buying an EFL club?

Whilst celebrities investing in football clubs is not a new phenomenon, with Elton John becoming the chairman of Watford back in 1973, what we have seen in recent years is an influx of American stars purchasing stakes in football clubs.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney paved the way when they purchased National League side Wrexham back in 2020, and the club has sky-rocketed through the leagues, as well as growing enormously in popularity during the time.

Since then we’ve seen Michael B. Jordan invest in Bournemouth, Tom Brady invest in Birmingham City, along with many other names purchase stakes in clubs across English football.

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that A$AP Rocky is the next to try his hand in football club ownership.

Which EFL Club is A$AP Rocky Buying?

A$AP Rocky, known for his hit songs Sundress and Everyday, is part of an investment group set to purchase Tranmere Rovers in League Two.

The Sun are reporting that the group is set to buy 80 percent of the club for a whopping £15 million. They also have discussed a potential move by a ‘major streaming service’ to commission a documentary in the ilk of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ about the Birkenhead-based club.

The club is currently owned by Mark Palios, who was formerly the Chief of the English Football Association.

The deal stems from Rocky’s relationship with Joe Tacopina, who spearheads the investment group, and is also defending Rocky in his ongoing trial over the shooting of A$AP Relli. Tacopina has been spotted at Tranmere games in the past, with the Sun confirming Rocky plans to visit Prenton Park should his not-guilty plea be successful.

What Does This Mean for Tranmere Rovers?

This deal would likely be good news for Tranmere Rovers. If you look at the success Wrexham have had over recent seasons, progressing from a National League side to fighting for promotion to the Championship, you’d imagine Tranmere would benefit from a similar progression.

Rocky, along with his girlfriend Rihanna, is unlikely to take an active role in the day-to-day proceedings of the club. However, the international recognition the rapper’s ownership would provide could prove invaluable for the long-term future of the club.
