Tolu Arokodare, Tolu, if I may – what the fuck do you think you’re doing, mate?

Pining for one move over another, throwing a strop, and sitting in the middle of the pitch in a full-on tantrum when someone disagreed with you, all after you scored just three goals in 33 Premier League games last season, a primary factor in your side's relegation.

You have no right to be asking for a starting spot, let alone a move away, and to have your entire team punished by missing a training session simply because you couldn’t take no for an answer – well, that's childish in the extreme, a piss-poor showing of player power that will only see managers crack down on it harder.

Let me set the scene for those of you who may not be caught up on the situation. On Tuesday, news broke that new Wolves manager Cesar Peixoto cancelled a training session because Arokodare refused to leave the training field, despite being requested not to train with the first-team squad.

The reason he was being excluded is due to significant transfer interest in the 6 ft 6 in forward, with both the Turkish side Trabzonspor and the Italian outfit Fiorentina keeping tabs on the striker, who had been immensely underwhelming in his debut season at the West Midlands club.

It is understood that Arokodare’s preferred destination was Fiorentina, with the player not keen on a move to Turkey, but the Italians had a bid turned away by Wolves, which is likely what caused the bizarre protest.

Thanks to his involvement in an outgoing transfer, Arokodare was supposed to be training separately from the squad, but instead, the Nigerian showed up alongside the usual first-team squad.

When he was spotted on the field and asked to leave, Arokodare refused, his reasoning being to persuade anyone who would listen to accept Fiorentina’s offer, which is rumoured to have been a package worth around £18.8 million.

I know Turkey is viewed as something of a retirement league, but being linked with the eastern European nation should never draw a reaction as extreme as this - if anything, the presence of countrymen Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu in the Turkish Super Lig should provide comfort, with Osimhen in particular helping to raise the profile of the league.

However, at 25, Arokodare clearly has loftier ambitions and, for reasons known only to him, came to the conclusion that the best way to achieve them at this moment in time was to ignore a manager’s orders and attempt to force the club's hand, an unwise decision at the best of times.

Emerging Pattern

Earlier today, Arokodare released a statement via Instagram denying any of the reports describing the incident.

In his message, Arokodare said, “I was very surprised and disappointed to see the media reports today, many of which are inaccurate. Throughout my career, I have always taken great pride in conducting myself professionally and maintaining the highest training standards.”

“My commitment has always been to prepare myself as well as possible so that I can contribute to my teammates and the club whenever I am called upon. I remain under contract with Wolves, and my only intention is to fulfil my responsibilities professionally by training, doing my job, and contributing to the team in accordance with that contract.”

A well-composed message for sure, and likely one that received heavy input from a PR representative. But while the words are believable, they lose some of their innocence when fans remember a controversy involving Arokodare that occurred less than four months ago.

After a 4-0 defeat at the hands of also-relegated West Ham back in April, Arokodare engaged in a verbal dispute with teammate Mateus Mané in the changing room after the halftime whistle. The altercation became physical, and with Arokordare described as the “sole aggressor”, he was subsequently fined by the club and left on the bench as an unused substitute for their next game against Leeds.

The Nigerian’s future at the club was called into question after the spat with one of the club's best young prospects, and now, after his reported sulkiness on the training ground, it is hard to take his statement at face value.

If he were a 20-goal-per-season striker, then perhaps his plea for a move to Italy would hold more weight. But with six goals in all competitions, Wolves garnered a reputation as one of the worst Premier League sides of all time; he is as far as you get from a position to negotiate.
