It is a widely known fact that Arsenal boast some of the finest squad depth in the Premier League - they have high-quality backup in every position, and this is reflected by their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
However, Arteta is constantly looking to add more firepower to the North London side, and according to Florian Plettenberg, is looking to bolster the midfield yet again this January, with Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali a primary target late in the transfer window.
Should Tonali make the shock move and move down south, he would become part of one of the most devastating midfield forces in world football - with Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Martin Odegaard and Ebere Eze, Tonali would simply be the cherry on the cake.
However, the 25-year-old will not come cheap if Arteta is to get his man - his market value currently stands at £49 million, and given Arsenal's heavy spending in the summer, it is unlikely they have the funds to spare unless they structure the deal over the next year or so.
However, it would surprise very few if the Italian international does move on - now in his prime, Tonali deserves to be playing at one of the best sides in the land, and with Newcastle underperforming down in 10th place, he will be itching to compete at the very top of the game once again.
Arsenal have already seen an undisclosed approach for the former Brescia wonderkid batted away by Newcastle, making an agreement in the remaining hours of the transfer window significantly less likely.
However, we have learnt that the word 'never' is not in Arteta’s dictionary, and if he is serious about making a deal, he will stop at nothing in what remains of the January transfer window.
