Aston Villa 2-0 West Ham Reaction: Villains claim first league win in four in important victory

Villa Park was the venue for a huge game at both ends of the table, as relegation battling West Ham were hosted by Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa, and it was the latter who came out on top.
Villa headed into this clash after three league defeats on the bounce, sandwiched between two successes vs Lille in the UEFA Europa League, but Unai Emery's team were in major need of three points ahead of their encounter with the Hammers.
West Ham meanwhile find themselves firmly in the fight against relegation to the EFL Championship alongside Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest. And with both Spurs and Forest taking on each other at the same time, any points gained from the Hammers would be crucial.
Villa needed a strong start in front of their home fans, and got it as they were presented with two chances in the opening minutes, Luca Digne fired a shot from distance which was saved by Mads Hermansen, following on from a superb last-ditch interception from Dinos Mavropanos prevented Ollie Watkins from an early tap-in.
However, Villa would get their early lead thanks to captain John McGinn, as the Scot brilliantly curled in an effort on the edge of the box into the far bottom corner on the 15th minute. Rewarding Villa's early dominance.

And it nearly became two for the home side soon after, as Watkins was denied midway through the first half thanks to a strong save by the legs of Hermansen, before Mavropanos was needed again for another vital block as the Greek defender cleared off the line from a corner to keep the score at 1-0 as the pressure from Villa continued.
The dominance from Unai Emery's side continued into the second half as they pushed for a second goal, and they got it just beyond the hour mark, as Watkins pounced on a rebound from Hermansen palming out a Morgan Rogers effort, and found the roof of the net to double Villa's lead, and all but confirm the points would be staying with the home side.

The Hammers had no answer in the final stages for their hosts, and the referee brought the action to a close to confirm a hugely deserved three points for Unai Emery's team, earning a huge win which moves the Villians into the top four, whilst Forest's 0-3 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium moves West Ham into the relegation zone with seven games to go. In what is proving to be one of the closest relefation battles in recent years.
