What are Aston Villa’s opening five fixtures?
Aston Villa vs Wolves - Saturday 21st September.
Wolves vs Aston Villa - Saturday 1st February.
Last five results when Villa have faced Wolves:
The Villains finished 4th last season with 68 points, two points ahead of a faltering Tottenham in the late stages of the season, in the process claiming the last guaranteed Champions League place.
It was an impressive season in which they were amongst the top three for a large proportion, but injuries and inexperience at the top end of the table got to them in the end.
Best Result: Aston Villa 1-0 Manchester City. (Bailey 74’).
Worst Result: Newcastle 5-1 Aston Villa . (Newcastle: Tonali 6’, Isak 16’, 58’, Wilson 77’, Barnes 90+1’. Aston Villa: Diaby 11’)
Unai Emery will look to build on his and Villa’s remarkable campaign last season. Finishing 7th in 2022/23 after arriving mid-season, Emery’s shrewd eye for talent that fits his tactical ethos saw his side make an exceptionally strong start to the 2023/24 season, placing themselves as high as second in matchweek 20.
A winner of 4 Europa League titles, Emery is an experienced hand on continental knockout football, and Villa’s return to the top echelon of such prestigious competition will provide an attractive challenge after their exploits in the Conference League, in which they were knocked out in the semis.
A real coup when he was appointed in October of 2022, Emery is the man to take Aston Villa forward, if their current progress continues, big things could be on the horizon very soon.
With the loss of Brazilian midfield maestro Douglas Luiz to Italian giants Juventus, the speed at which Onana slots into his new role in the Villa midfield will be crucial if they are to have another solid campaign.
After impressing at the Euros in a largely poor Belgian squad, and with a history of catching the attention of big clubs including Chelsea and Manchester United, Villa will be very happy they were able to secure his signature.
His press resistance, success rate in offensive duels, and calm demeanor on the ball are all traits for which Douglas Luiz was so valued for, and Aston Villa fans will hope this like-for-like replacement brings similar success.
With a squad now competing in the Champions League as well as the domestic league, people would be forgiven for thinking that Unai Emery’s side will experience burnout at some point this season.
However, with some quality additions to the squad already under their belts this transfer window, there is certainly cause for optimism, and although playing such high quality opposition in the Champions league will be a challenge, it will be one that Aston Villa relish.
With an almost faultless record at home in the last two seasons, there are no hints that their form will drop off at the start of the new season, and as long as they can keep Villa Park as a fortress, then they will pose some serious issues to the big sides when they inevitably visit.
