Aston Villa Set For UEFA Champions League Return
Aston Villa are finally set to play a UEFA Champions League game again tonight as they take on Young Boys in what is sure to be an interesting matchup.
With it being so long since their last appearance in the competition we thought we’d have a look back at when they were last in the competition before this as well as having a look back at some of their best ever Champions League moments.
The last time the Villans were in the Champions League was way back in the 1982/83 season - 41 YEARS AGO!
In fact at that time the competition wasn’t even the Champions League. It was instead the European Cup.
That year Villa reached the Quarter Final stages before being knocked out by eventual runners up Juventus - losing 5-2 on aggregate over 2 legs.
To go back to Villa’s best season in the competition you don’t have to look hard.
In 1981/82 Aston Villa lifted the trophy beating Bayern Munich in Rotterdam. This making them the fourth successive team to win the trophy.
It may have been 41 years since Villa competed in the UEFA Champions League but they have been in a European competition more recently.
Of course last season they played in the UEFA Conference League losing 2-0 in the semi finals to eventual winners Olympiacos.
Aside from that though they played in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup as well as the qualifying stages for the UEFA Europa League in 2009 and 2010 - failing to qualify.
Overall Aston Villa have played in the Europa League/UEFA Cup 13 times.
With the new format to the Champions League Villa will play 8 teams before the knockout rounds - if they are to make it there.
They will play Young Boys, Bayern Munich, Bologna, Club Brugge, Juventus, RB Leipzig, Monaco and Celtic.
Do you fancy Aston Villa’s chances in the UEFA Champions League this year?
