Aston Villa show interest in sought-after Chelsea midfielder

Aston Villa are the latest club to show interest in Chelsea’s Connor Gallagher, as per the Telegraph.

The English midfielder’s deal at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of next season, and Chelsea may well look to cash in on Gallagher this summer. Any transfer fee they receive for Gallagher will count as profit, given he came through their academy, as Chelsea look to comply with profit and sustainability laws.

Aston Villa just qualified for next season's UEFA Champions League, and will need to bolster their squad in order to be competitive amongst Europe’s elite clubs. However, Villa will need to be careful as they look to avoid punishment for breaching financial fair play.

Chelsea have previously held an interest in Villa's in Jhon Duran and, given both clubs current financial situations, perhaps we will see a deal struck for Duran as part of the negotiations for Gallagher.

Tottenham Hotspur are also very keen on signing Gallagher, but the Villains may be able to tempt the England international to the midlands with the guarantee of Champions League football.

It’s understood Chelsea value Gallagher at £50 million, which his performances have warranted, but given his contract situation interested clubs may be able to strike a cheaper deal.
