Atalanta Close in on Ben Godfrey

According to Darmesh Sheth, who Football Park rate as a tier two source, Atalanta are closing in on a deal to sign Ben Godfrey.

Atalanta have agreed a fee with Everton in the region of £10 million to bring the Englishman to La Dea.

The defender signed for the Toffees from Norwich back in 2020 for a fee of €27 million, but after a fibula injury in the 2022/23 campaign, has fallen out of favour on Merseyside. His cut price may also be a result of Everton desperately trying to raise funds, given their issues with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Godfrey is a versatile player, capable of operating across the backline and even sometimes in a defensive midfield position. His good form at the beginning of his Everton career even earned him two senior England caps, but has yet to appear for the Three Lions since.

As Atalanta look to build on a successful season, after beating the seemingly ‘unbeatable’ Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final. Should Godfrey regain the form he showed at Norwich, he could prove to be a real bargain, and provide a viable option to compete with a reasonably solid Serie A defence.

Atalanta should have more money to play with this summer, as it looks like Chelsea are willing to meet the €60 million valuation they have placed on Ademola Lookman.
