Athletic Bilbao Legend Pens New Deal

13/06/24 11:08

Ander Herrara has put pen to paper on a new deal with Athletic Club, keeping him at the San Mames for another year.

The midfielder first joined the Basque-based club back in 2011, and enjoyed three years at the club before departing to Manchester United in 2014 for a €36 million fee. He rejoined Bilbao in 2022, and has spent the last two years there.

The 34-year-old won the Europa League, FA Cup and League cup during his time at Manchester United, and this campaign he added a Copa Del Rey to his collection.

With Iker Munian and Raul Garcia leaving, Herrara will provide much needed experience to a young squad. Given Athletic Club can only sign players from the Basque region, a certain portion of Northern Spain and a small chunk of France, it makes sense for them to keep Herrara around while he’s still performing.

Herrara did have the option to return to his boyhood club Real Zaragoza, but he decided to stay put at Bilbao where he is adored.
