Australia made the perfect start to their World Cup campaign at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada. The first-half display that saw them take control against Turkey despite them enjoying plenty of possession and creating several promising moments. The Socceroos struck first through teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda in the 27th minute.
The 20-year-old forward etched his name into the history books by becoming Australia's youngest-ever FIFA World Cup goalscorer. After latching onto a precise pass from Paul Okon-Engstler, Irankunda showed outstanding composure, cutting inside before drilling a low finish beyond the goalkeeper.
Tony Popovic's youthful side featured 10 players making their World Cup debuts. The side looked energetic and fearless throughout the opening 45 minutes. Turkey had moments where they looked threatening, however, with Abdulkerim Bardakci forcing Patrick Beach into an excellent save from long range, but Australia carried their one-goal advantage into the break.

Turkey increased the pressure after the restart as they searched for an equaliser, but Australia's defence held firm behind an inspired Patrick Beach. The 22-year old goalkeeper, who was handed a surprise start ahead of veteran Mat Ryan for his first competitive international, produced a string of impressive saves to deny both Arda Güler from a free-kick and Zeki Çelik from close range.
As Turkey pushed numbers forward, Australia punished a costly mistake late on. Connor Metcalfe capitalised on sloppy defending, winning possession before calmly firing a low effort into the bottom corner to double the Socceroos' lead and put the result beyond doubt.

The Galatasaray winger was hooked just after half-time. During the season, Yilmaz recorded 12 goals and 14 assists across all competitions for Galatasaray. With this being Turkey's first world cup appearance since 2002, fans will be expecting a lot more from the side going forward, and Yilmaz will need to delvier quickly or his side may face an early exit.
