Belters of the Weekend: The Best Goals from Yesterday’s EFL League Two Action

The international break may be well underway, but EFL League Two continued to supply fans with some thrilling scorelines yesterday. English four-tier football never fails to deliver drama, but the league is often overlooked and pushed to the back of the line, behind the likes of the Premier League.

However, with the top tiers of the pyramid out of action, there was increased attention on League Two. In case you missed events that unfurled, Football Park has compiled a list of the finest strikes from matchday 12. Strap yourselves in, because a rollercoaster of scenes awaits.

Alex Gilbey (Bristol Rovers 0-4 MK Dons)

Kicking it off with MK Dons’ third goal from their away thrashing of Bristol Rovers. Alex Gilbey picked up his fourth of the season from midfield with a sweet turn and finish move directly from a free kick. The beauty behind this goal comes in two parts. First, the single touch Gilbey takes, manipulating the ball and turning his body to position himself for a sweet volleyed finish.

This move appears to be a rehearsed move from training. The Rovers defenders were left a mess, scrambling to figure out who to mark, with Gilbey left completely free and completely unstoppable.

Bobby Kamwa (Accrington Stanley 0-1 Newport County)

Scoring the sole goal to give your team a 1-0 away victory is a brilliant feeling in itself, and whilst Newport County’s single strike was credited as an own goal. It was winger Bobby Kamwa, who truly handed the Welsh side their first league win in 63 days.

Starting on the right flank, Kamwa breezes past two Accrington defenders before sending the ball flying towards goal from a far angle. Fortunately, a deflection meant that the opposing keeper was left completely helpless. Newport’s second win of the season lifts them from the bottom of the table and just a single point from safety.

Connor Barrett (Crawley Town 1-1 Walsall)

The table toppers were held to a draw in Sussex this weekend, but the travelling Saddlers fans' journey was definitely worth it after they witnessed one of Walsall’s goals of the season so far. Barrett bagged his third of the season with a strike that had an xG of 0.05, a soaring effort that flew into the left side netting at an impressive velocity.

Sam Sherring (Gillingham 1-1 Cheltenham)

Another MK Dons player on the list, this one on loan at Cheltenham. Central defender Sam Sherring scored his first goal for the Robins away in Kent. The majority expected Gillingham to cruise to victory against a Cheltenham side that has sulked in the relegation zone since August, but thanks to Sherring’s goal, that was not the case.

A lot of credit should be given to Isaac Hutchinson, whose mazy run, followed by a cannoning strike, would’ve found itself on this list if it hadn’t bounced off the crossbar. However, Sherring takes the flowers instead, his diving header from the rebound of Hutchinson’s strike a memorable goal. The centre-back’s first since December 2022.

Micah Mbick (Grimsby 1-2 Colchester)

Saving the best goal ‘til last. Mbick has four goals and one assist in his last five games for Colchester. The Charlton Athletic loanee was on the verge of breaking into the Addicks’ first team, and will see this temporary spell in League Two as a chance to prove himself to Nathan Jones.

The 2006-born talent’s two goals against Grimsby were enough to see the Us return to Essex with all three points. His second strike was a special moment. Mbick latched onto a long ball from defender Harvey Araujo, making the first connection with his teammates' long pass to flick the ball over a tumbling Grimsby defender. His second - and goal-scoring - touch came from 30 yards out, a simple lob over an approaching Christy Pym that sailed over his head and into an empty home net. Perfection.
