Birmingham City have taken no time in improving their squad this January - harbouring surprise ambitions of back-to-back promotions all the way up to the Premier League, it had been becoming very clear that the current crop of players, while talented, were not going to get them there alone.
Since the start of the window, Birmingham has acquired four new stars, including left back Kai Wagner (£2.1 million), defensive midfielder Jhon Solis (£415,000), and exciting Danish youngster August Priske, acquired for £5.9 million.

With improvements to the defence, midfield, and left side of the attack, Chris Davies has now turned his attention to the right flank, with pricey Deportivo Alaves winger Carlos Vicente at the top of his wishlist.
26-year-old Vicente has been in fine form for the Spanish side this season, with his nine goals and further three assists the only reason Alaves do not lie at the bottom of the table, instead placing them 18th, two points from safety.
Though only four of these goals have come in the league, it has been noticed that Vicente comes alive in cup fixtures, with his record of five goals and three assists in the Copa del Rey placing him in the top two of both contribution rankings this season.
Furthermore, the winger has gained a reputation as someone who thrives in big games - he has scored against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla twice this season, providing the side's main attacking threat against opposition who dominate the ball.
However, his ever-present threat and excellent form are reflected by a pricey release clause of £20 million, a figure which even the Tom Brady-backed Birmingham would be reluctant to meet.
In addition, Birmingham also face significant competition from Dutch heavyweights Ajax, who themselves are looking to make a quick fix to what has been a below-par season, with the Amsterdam club lying a lowly third in the Eredivisie.
Ajax boast far more financial power than the Championship club, meaning that Birmingham will have to be shrewd in their negotiations. However, they have been given a boost by the fact that Vicente would prefer a move to the Blues over a transfer to the Netherlands, making talks that little bit more straightforward.
Finally… reports over here are now reporting about Carlos Vicente, be a top signing this 👏 #bcfc https://t.co/TB05zAL0Yt

The Midlands side have moved quickly, and are rumoured to have reached a preliminary agreement with Alaves for the transfer of Vicente for around €10.
Furthermore, they are doing all they can to lure the attacker to St Andrews, and are reported to have submitted an “astronomical” contract offer to the Spaniard in a bid to scare off their competition.
While this transfer saga is far from its conclusion, things are really hotting up now - Ajax believe the player can help turn them back into Dutch juggernauts, while Birmingham see him as the perfect attacker to push them back into the promotion race. However this ends, this bidding war is about to get entertaining.
