Blades Bracing For Brentford Bid as Midfield Star Nears Exit

Brentford Set to Enquire Over Sheffield United Midfield Star

Tipped to taste relegation at the start of the 2025/26 season, Brentford have surprised many of us with the quality and maturity of their performances despite losing a host of key players over the summer transfer window.

Bryan Mbuemo, Yoane Wissa and Mark Flekken all departed the club, and Bees fans feared the worse - however, some superb summer recruitment, combined with the outrageous form of Igor Thiago, has seen all of these positions filled in a manner which would suggest that the recently departed were never that important anyway.

Now sitting 15th, a comfortable seven points clear of the drop zone, Brentford are looking to double down on their gutsy first half of the season, and are rumoured to be taking a very close look at Sheffield United midfielder Sydie Peck to bring an extra element of control to the centre of the park.

Who is Sydie Peck?

Despite the Blades performing well below their usual standard so far this campaign, Sydie Peck has been a shining star at Bramall Lane. An all-action midfielder, he leads Championship-wide stats in attacking, possession and defensive metrics, a testament to his all-round ability.

Brought in from Oldham Athletic in 2023, Peck made just a solitary appearance as the Blades were relegated from the Premier League a year later, but since then, he has exploded onto the scene at Sheffield United - in the last two seasons, he has played 67 games, notching three goals and five assists in that time.

However, it seems the Blades are about to be deprived of their star man; Brentford’s Premier League status provides plenty of appeal in the first place, and the fact that ex-Sheffield coach Jack Lester is also currently in the club’s employ is expected to make the move just that much more attractive.

However, the Bees won’t have it easy - United have slapped Peck with a £20 million price tag, a figure which, if met, would make him the fifth most valuable Championship sale this season.

The news of Peck being linked with a move away comes off the back of rumours that the club’s star man, Gustavo Hamer, could also be making an exit at Bramall Lane - bereft of arguably their two best assets, United’s recent turnaround in form could potentially come to a juddering halt.

Should Hamer leave, United would miss his goals, assists, and ability to pull off the outrageous. However, should Peck say farewell, it would be a far bigger blow - their heartbeat in the middle, his absence will be felt far more keenly than Hamer’s - the Dutchman has been linked with a move away from the club since June.

At just 21, Peck so much potential left to unlock, and going off his performances this season, it would be a surprise to no-one if he was scooped up by a Premier League club by the beginning of next season.

However, Chris Wilder and Sheffield United will be looking to prolong the inevitable for as long as possible - without him, they are suddenly an incomplete team, and will be left scrambling for a replacement who, in all likelihood, won’t have even half the influence of the Brentford target. Keep an eye on this one.
