Cunha and Vinicius Star As Brazil Cruise Past Haiti To Go Top Of Group C

The Haitian resistance proved difficult to break down, but goals from Matheus Cunha and Vinicius Jr saw Brazil run out 3-0 winners in Philadelphia on Friday evening to see them go top of Group C on goal difference.

Both sides headed to Philiadelphia winless after Brazil drew to Morocco and Haiti were defeated by Scotland, but Friday evening was a chance for them to right their wrongs from matchday one and to put themselves in a strong position come matchday three.

Following Morocco's narrow win over Scotland, it meant that Brazil had to win against Haiti to ensure they would go into next week's matchday three in the top two and with qualification in their hands, while Haiti were looking to build upon their spirited loss to the Scots on Sunday.

After matchday one's poor performance all around from Brazil, Carlo Ancelotti ordered his men to go out and do the business tonight and get the Selecao back to where they belong - at the top of Group C.

Brazil 3-0 Haiti: As it Happened

Spanish official Jose Hernandez stamped his authority on the game from the third minute, forcing Haitian full-back Carlens Arcus to see yellow for a rash stomp on Zenit's Douglas Santos meaning he would be walking on thin ice while having to defend Vinicius Jr for the remainder of the clash.

The gap in quality was evidently large from the outset, making it rather clear as Haiti opted for a low block in the hopes to frustrate the World Cup's most successful nation.

And just 11 minutes through, Brazil thought they had taken the lead. Picked up carefully by Bruno Guimaraes who lifted it delicately over the Haitian defence into Raphinha who slotted confidently into the top left corner, only for celebrations to be curtailed by the linesman's flag.

Fast approaching the cooling break, the deadlock was yet to be broken, but the goal was always coming. The raucous atmosphere that was there for moments after the offside goal had no reason to stop this time. Vinicius Jr caused havoc in the box before cutting in and testing Johny Placide in goal; but something that easily should have been held, spilled out to a patient Cunha who bundled the ball home off the leg of a Haitian defender as Ancelotti's side could breathe a sigh of relief.

Immediately after the hydration break, Brazil found yet another superb ball over the top. This time it was Lucas Paqueta who released a 35-yard peach into the path over Raphinha but his tame effort was this time met with ease by Placide.

It didn't take long for the classy Brazilian dances to continue. This goal was much more impressive than the first. Vinicius Jr collected the ball from midfield before he played in Cunha behind the defence who let rip a snorting finish into the roof in the left side of Placide's goal - Brazil are back.

It wasn't all sparkles and rainbows in the opening period for Brazil, however, as Raphinha had to be taken off early through a hamstring concern and he was replaced by Bournemouth star Rayan.

There was still one more goal for the Brazilians to cheer for before the break. This time another delicious ball over the top from Paqueta saw Vinicius Jr run onto it, and you know the rest. 3-0.

Coming into the second period, it is safe to say Haiti needed more than subs to get back into the game, but bringing on Dominique Simon and Wilson Isidor could bring some hope back into Sebastien Migne's side.

Brazil came out the gates in the second half like a side who had already won, and it took them over 10 minutes to finally start crafting more chances. It came on the hour mark through Vinicius Jr once again, who ripped down the left side of the box, flashing a ball across goal but Rayan's outstretched boot couldn't quite find the contact required.

Minutes before the hydration break and Haiti came ever so close to finding that first World Cup goal. Ricardo Ade came rushing on to a corner, flicking the ball on and forcing Alisson into a terrific save which still had to be cleared off the line by Gabriel to keep the clean sheet intact.

Brazil's fourth almost arrived in stunning fashion. A beautiful piece of football started by Guimaraes, who played the ball to Vinicius Jr to roll it behind him to an oncoming Gabriel Martinelli, who smashed the ball on the upright and he came an inch or two away from scoring one of the goals of the tournament so far.

It didn't take long for Brazil to find said fourth, however, with Endrick running through on to a ball that was destined to make it 4-0... oh wait, offside. Again.

Isidor almost found a special moment for the Haitian's, but it wasn't to be as Brazil held out for the 3-0 win.

Player of the Match - Vinicius Jr

There were a few Brazil players who shone today, but Vinicius Jr has continued to show his class following on from his goal against Morocco.

He again played a very strong cameo this evening, making a number of darting runs as well as providing quality balls to expose the Haiti defence.

One goal and one assist, over 10 touches in the Haiti box, and the most shots of any player, he was class tonight, and might be one hell of a player to face up against for defenders later in the competition.

Bad Day at the Office - Johny Placide

There was a number of occasions where the Haiti defence was just ever so poor, but no one will say Placide couldn't have had a better day in goal today.

The 38-year-old was at the forefront of the error which led to the deadlock being broken, with his poor spill gifting Brazil the lead they desired, and from there it was carnage until half-time.

The other goals in the half could have also seen him deal with better, but it just wasn't to be as their hopes for qualifcation to the knockouts on tournament debut are practically over.
