Brentford youngster Jayden Meghoma poised for Portsmouth loan

Brentford left-back Jayden Meghoma is set to join Portsmouth on loan, with the Bees once again sending the youngster out in search of the regular first-team football needed to continue his development.

Since arriving from Southampton on 30 August 2024, Meghoma has made just four appearances for the London side, only one of which came in the Premier League.

Opportunities have been scarce, but the Bees have ensured his development has not stalled, sending him out on loan in each of the last two seasons. Across spells with Preston North End and Rangers, the young full-back has accumulated 58 appearances.

It was his 44-game spell north of the border, however, that earned the greatest plaudits. Effectively thrown in at the deep end, Meghoma kept his composure and grew into the challenge, registering six assists across the season.

Reflecting on his time in Scotland, Meghoma admitted that, “It was an experience, to be honest with you. There were highs, there were lows; enjoyable moments and not-so-enjoyable moments.

“But, at the end of the day, it was really good for me and I think I’ve come back a different player, so that has really helped me.

“I learned a lot, to be honest with you,” he continued. “I learned about the pressures of the game and certain scenarios.

“It was an enjoyable experience, and I took it for what it was.”

Now, as deadline day gathers pace, Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas has confirmed that Meghoma will join Championship side Portsmouth on loan.

The move may come as something of a disappointment to the young full-back.

Speaking ahead of the season, Meghoma confessed that he was, “trying to break through and making sure that I cement myself in the team.”

Instead, the 20-year-old is set for another temporary departure, joining Pompey as they look to keep their heads above water in the Championship before potentially pushing towards a top-half finish.
