Where did Brighton finish last season?

Despite starting the season in flying form, winning four of their first five games, the talented Brighton squad couldn’t handle the increased match load that comes with European football, and ended the season in 11th.

Contesting in the Europa Conference league after an impressive sixth place finish in 2022/23, last season was experience building one, introducing many of their players to continental tournament football for the first time. They were as high as seventh in matchweek 25, but a serious drop off in form saw any European aspirations dissolve in the late stages of the campaign.

However, while they couldn’t make the jump from plucky underdog to big team disruptor, they certainly entertained under Roberto De Zerbi, with a total of 117 goals scored across their 38 matches. With an exciting squad, and some equally interesting signings coming in, it will be interesting to see how the Seagulls kick on from here.

Best Result - Manchester United 1-3 Brighton. (United: Mejbri 73’. Brighton: Welbeck 20’, Gross 53’, Pedro 71’).

Worst Result - Aston Villa 6-1 Brighton. (Villa: Watkins 14’, 21’, 65’, Estupinan O.G. 26’, Ramsey 85’, Luiz 90+7’. Brighton: Fati 50’).

Who is Brightons’ manager for 2024/25?

Hurzeler.jpg

In a long line of well scouted, data-driven managerial choices, Fabian Hurzeler became the newest Brighton coach on June 15th.

In the process, the 31-year-old made history, becoming the youngest ever coach of a Premier League team on a full time basis. For context, this makes him younger than Brighton first teamers James Milner, Lewis Dunk and Joel Veltman.

However, Hurzeler has achieved much in his young career to date, most recently winning the Bundesliga 2 with former club St Pauli. Winning 20 of his 34 matches on his way to the title, Brighton clearly saw great potential in both his man and tactical management, and signed him on a three year contract.

Also chosen for his similar style to De Zerbi and Graham Potter, it will be interesting to see whether Hurzeler’s tactics translate as well as both of his predecessors.

Who is Brightons’ player to watch for 2024/25? Kaoru Mitoma.

Mitoma.jpg

Who knows where Brighton could have ended if Mitoma had stayed fit last season. After an electric start to the season, with four goals and assists in the opening four games, and with Brighton off to a flying start, Mitoma left the field injured 3 days before Christmas towards the end of a spicy game against Crystal Palace in the A23 derby.

Brighton’s form plunged after the loss of the tricky left winger, and he would only play twice more after new year. It is testament to how important he is to the way they play, trying to be as direct as possible off the left flank to find penetrative passes or pick routes for mazy runs.

Almost impossible to take the ball off, it is now a well known fact that his university dissertation was based on the science of dribbling past an opponent, something he is evidently pretty good at doing. Hopefully in 2024/25, Mitoma will have the full season to showcase this ability.

Brighton Season Prediction

Brighton have a very clear vision when it comes to making deals in the transfer window: buy young. In the last two summer windows, the Seagulls have managed to avoid spending money on any player over 25 years of age. The only two pieces of business that contradict the clear age limit are James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud, who were both free transfers.

This summer, Brighton have made four potentially first team ready signings, and true to their now well defined model, three of them are teenagers, while Mats Wieffer is just 24.

Brighton have become totally focused around developing young talent, and this benefits them in two ways; firstly, they benefit from playing exciting young talents who, although still fairly raw, are able to come up with moments of brilliance (think of Julio Enciso’s screamers against Chelsea and Manchester City in 2022/23).

Secondly, and arguably most importantly, if they develop these young players enough, big clubs start to envy the array of talent at Brighton’s disposal, and come knocking with obscene sums of money to pry away some of these breakthrough stars.

It has to be said that Brighton have had unheard of success with this model, and their data-driven analysis of signings has rarely gone wrong. With such a sustainable business model, expect Brighton to continue impressing.

Prediction: 10th.
