Brighton Demolish Aston Villa in the Opening Weekend of the Premier League

WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE, SAY WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE. To put it simply, that was simply incredible from Brighton. A first half blitz put the game well beyond Villa’s reach as Brighton became the fastest Premier League side to go 4-0 up in an opening weekend game since Manchester United against Fulham in the 2006/07 season. The Albions goals came from a Lindelof own goal, Maxim De Cuyper and a brace from one of our own, Jack Hinshelwood.

Fabian Hurzeler couldn’t have asked for a better start to the new season, in what is his third now with the Seagulls. The German takes his aggregate score on opening day to an impressive 8-1 victory after beating Everton 3-0 in 24/25 and drawing to Fulham 1-1 in 25/26. Unai Emery on the other hand couldn’t have asked for a worse start. Not just losing 4-0 but losing new signing Joao Gomes to a three game suspension following his red card in the first half. As a team that’s already struggling with numbers, a suspension is the last thing he would have wanted.

Contrary to the final score Aston Villa actually started the better of the two, in the first 10/15 minutes they looked very dangerous. Emiliano Buendia popped up with their best chance as Yasin Ayari was disposessed on the edge of the Brighton box, the ball found its way to Buendia and he tried to place it past Verbruggen but the shot narrowly missed the target and a big let off for Brighton.

On the 8th minute mark Brighton took advantage of a very poor bit of play from Pau Torres. As the Spaniard passed the ball straight to De Cuyper in the Villa box, the Belgian sent Marco Bizot no problem and unleashed a shot on a pretty much empty net from a tight angle. He slightly miscued the shot as it bounced off the post, but fortunately enough it bounced straight onto Lindelof and into the back of the net. 1-0 Brighton.

Minutes later the referee went on a mini power trip as he booked three players in the space of two minutes. Joao Gomes for asking for a card with his hands and from the same bit of possession Pascal Gross was booked for holding Gomes back. Then a minute later Ayari found himself in the book as he was cautioned for a minimal foul on Boubacar Kamara.

On the 18th minute Brighton doubled their advantage. A brilliant goal set up beautifully by Rutter. Dunk lofted the ball over the top for Georginio as he drove forward with Torres fighting alongside him, the Frenchman kept on powering forward until he reached the byline. He cut it back superbly and right into the path of De Cuyper as he tapped home from a couple yards out to make it 2-0 Brighton.

At this point I’m sure a lot of Brighton fans would be casting their minds back to Aston Villa at home last season. Similarly the Seagulls went 2-0 up early doors in that one, only to throw the game away and lose 3-4.

Aston Villa’s backline kept inviting pressure on themselves however, Torres again getting dispossessed on the edge of his box. Rutter this time unleashing a shot which was parried over by Bizot.

And just 12 minutes later Brighton’s very own, Jack Hinshelwood, turned the 2-0 lead into a 3-0 lead. A wonderfully worked team goal that started with a pinpoint cross field ball from Luka Vuskovic to find De Cuyper on the left hand side. Maxim doing what he does best, whipped in a delicious cross as Diego Gomez headed back across goal to Hinshelwood who couldn’t miss. 3-0 Brighton.

And before anyone could catch their breath. 4-0 Brighton. Straight from kick off Villa play their way back to Bizot who gave it to Gomes. Ayari quickly pounced on the opportunity and nicked the ball from the Brazilians feet and the ball ended up into the path of Hinshelwood who drilled it home to secure his brace and all but secure the three points.

And as if the day couldn’t get any better… It did. Gomes, who was on debut by the way, lashed out and kicked up at Rutter after being tackled by him. Initially the ref didn’t see it but was referred to the VAR screen by the VAR officials and they deemed it as violent conduct and Gomes was on his way with a chorus of “Cheerio” being chanted by the home crowd.

Now the second half was probably some of the most uneventful bit of football of all time. Sort of a game if you had on career mode in FIFA you’d just sim to the end of the game at halftime. Well that’s practically what Brighton did. It was clear the foot was off the gas.

Half chances came and went for the Seagulls. The best chance coming for Costinha on his Premier League debut, drilling a shot onto the post where it fell to Charalampos Kostoulas who scored however the Greek was about half a yard offside.

Ibrahim Osman also came off the bench and had a promising cameo. Going down in the box from a challenge from John McGinn but somehow the ref and VAR decided no penalty. A scandalous decision if it wasn’t 4-0 Brighton.

This is only going to one man, Jack Hinshelwood. The 21 year old picking up a brace to kick the Premier League season off in style who was very clinical when needed and absolutely tore Villa a new one. I have incredibly high hopes and expectations for him this season. His versatility is up there with what Brighton fans have seen with Pascal Gross and Jack has really moulded into a really smart attacker, whether that’s playing as a 10 or a 9. Without a doubt I can see him getting double digit goals and assists the season if he can continue with this kind of form.
