Brighton Book Their Place in the Conference League League Phase

The Seagulls made lightwork of Tromsø despite the struggle they encountered in the first leg up in Norway, we’ll put that down to rustiness and the artificial pitch. Another scintillating first half display put the game to bed, much like the Villa match, and it was cruise control for all of the second half.

Goals from Babis Kostoulas, Maxim De Cuyper, Mats Wieffer and Olivier Boscagli saw Brighton come away 4-0 winners on the night as well as on aggregate across the tie. It was a performance to be proud of and another huge confidence booster that the squad can take forward into these next few Premier League fixtures before the international break.

Brighton vs Tromsø As It Happened

Similar to the first leg, Brighton were very clearly the better side and the side controlling the tempo of the game. It would take Kostoulas just five minutes to perform his new trademark bicycle kick that flew well wide of the mark, 10/10 on the technique though.

A big blow for Tromsø however as just 12 minutes in, centre back Vetle Skjaervik went down injured and would have to be stretchered off. The Norwegian only just coming back from a previous injury too.

Chances kept on coming for the Seagulls who were adamant on a high press. And this high press would eventually pay dividends as De Cuyper would steal the ball from Isak Dahlqvist. The ball finding its way to Kostoulas who unleashed a powerful low driven shot into the bottom corner. 1-0 Brighton.

Brighton would double their advantage 11 minutes later, De Cuyper pouncing once again, this time Leon Hien being the one stripped of the ball and just a few yards out the Belgian would slot it past Jakob Haugaard. De Cuyper is certainly enjoying his football lately, back to back games with a goal and an assist.

Mats Wieffer then got in on the act five minutes later. The Dutchman bundling his way forward as he spread it out wide, continuing his run forward he would receive the ball in the Tromsø box and with the ball bouncing he then thundered it into the back of the net to pick up his first goal of the season.

Halftime Score – Brighton 3-0 Tromsø

Tromsø made three first half changes with Brighton making two, one being Pascal Struijk as he made his Albion debut.

As the second half started it was clear to see we’d be seeing what we saw vs Villa. Brighton taking their foot firmly off the accelerator and seeing out the game.

Cameos from Zadok Yohanna and Ibrahim Osman gave Brighton some energy on either wings, then Boscagli found the back of the net around the 80th minute, only for the Frenchman to have his goal ruled out for offside.

Six minutes later he would find the back of the net legally. A headed clearance landed at his feet on the edge of the box as he unleashed his effort, a slight deflection took it past the reach of Haugaard and solidify a brilliant evening from Brighton. Back to back 4-0 wins at home ain’t too shabby.

Brighton vs Tromsø Man of the Match

This award could easily go to two Brighton players but personally I’m giving it to Boscagli instead of De Cuyper. Boscagli just has the presence of someone who can take control of any sort of situation and I believe we are seeing the very best of him across his career. Despite playing at left back he seemed to be everywhere, helping link up plays and creating chances. He created the most chances in the game and popped up with a brilliantly taken goal. Oh and another thing, he just gets it. More of this please Olivier.
