Can Dortmund make UCL history with an historic comeback?

15/04/24 05:10

Borussia Dortmund welcome Atletico Madrid to the Signal Iduna Park for the second-leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday. With the score currently at 2-1 to this week's visitors, can Dortmund pull it back with the home advantage?

Borussia Dortmund vs Atletico Madrid stats

In terms of head-to-head stats, the last time these two met was of course last week, when Rodrigo De Paul and Lino had Atletico to goals ahead before half-time. Sebastian Haller managed to pull a goal back with 10 minutes to go, a goal that on the night seemed pointless, but could make all the difference by the end of Tuesday.

In the UEFA Champions League, these two sides have previously met on four occasions before this tie. First in the 1996/97 season, when Dortmund won the first group game thanks to a Setfan Reuter goal. But it was Atletico who got their revenge in the second meeting, Milinko Pantic and Roberto Fresnedoso scoring. Dortmund went on to win that year's competition, beating Juventus 3-1 in the final.

The sides next met in the group stages of 2018/19. Dortmund thumped Atletico 4-0 in the first meeting, as Wtisel, Raphael Guerreiro and Jadon Sancho all scored. One of the finest performances ever by the German giants in Europe.

For the return game in Spain however, Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann won it for Diego Simeone’s side. As Current Arsenal player Thomas Partey slotted through the French striker to seal the deal. Dortmund went on to lose to Tottenham Hotspur, and Atletico to Juventus both in the round of 16.

So far this season, Dortmunds top scorers are Niclas Füllkrug and Donyell Mallen, who both have 12 goals so far. Behind them is Julian Brandt with 7, and legend Marco Reus on 6.

Brandt is their top assist contributor so far in 2023/24, with 12 to his name. Füllkrag is next with 10, Sabitzer on 5 and Reus with 4.

For Atletico Madrid, the goals have been flying in this season. Antoine Griezmann is back to his best with 19 goals in all competitions so far, at the age of 33. Álvaro Morata has also netted 19, he’s 31, and is on course to reach his highest ever scoring season.

When it comes to assists, Griezmann has seven so far, and is of course his side's highest contributor this campaign. Next up is Lino, who’s set up five goals.

Borussia Dortmund vs Atletico Madrid Standings

Dortmund are currently 5th in the Bundesliga table, coming towards the end of an underwhelming season. They’re 23 points behind the league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who won the title on Sunday. They’re level on 56 points with RB Leipzig, who are 4th, as both teams compete for Champions League qualification. However, according to the new UEFA rankings, 5th place could also secure the UCL for next season in Germany.

Atletico Madrid are 4th in La Liga, on 61 points, 17 off league leaders Real Madrid. Spain will most likely not secure a 5th Champions League spot for next season, so securing a top 4 finish will be a top priority for the Spanish side. With seven games left to go, they’re five points ahead of Atletico Bilbao in 5th.
