Can Juventus Hold Onto Top Four In The Serie A?
With 10 games left in the Serie A, Juventus currently hold fourth place in the standings, claiming the last available UEFA Champions League spot. It might seem like an impossibility, but it is actually mathematically possible for them to lift the Scudetto come the end of the season. Juventus are better off trying to remain in the elite European football places however, regrouping in the summer break and try again in next year’s edition of Italy’s topflight.

Thiago Motta swapped Bologna for Juventus at the start of the of the season after helping his Bologna side fifth place and UEFA Champions League football by the time the 2023/24 season had ended.
He was cutthroat in his approach, letting anyone who didn’t suit his plans to find moves elsewhere, including the likes of Federico Chiesa, once a young prodigy at the club and then club captain Danilo who has now found his way back home to Brazil playing for Flamengo.

The aim was to win the Serie A title, something that Max Allegri was unable to do in his second stint at the club. After 28 games and Juventus reside in fourth place with a record of 13 wins, two losses and 13 draws. Those results have left them with a tally of 52 points, just a single point over Lazio who a gunning for that UEFA Champions League spot.
Motta might not have been getting his players to produce the most visually exciting football in the world but he his getting results. Juventus have the best defensive record across the Serie A, being handed defeat only twice this season. They came curtesy of Napoli at the back end of January and from Atalanta in their most recent match. The Old Lady have kept the most clean sheets in the competition with 14, making them ahead of the 12 from Inter Milan, Napoli and Atalanta who all sit in 1-2-3 in the Serie A table.
European night won’t be a problem the rest of the season for Juventus as Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven saw that they were eliminated in the preliminary Round of 16 stage. Their nearest rivals in Lazio still have to deal with their UEFA Europa League campaign, taking a 1-2 advantage into their second leg against Viktoria Plzen this Thursday. The Coppa Italia won’t be a problem for Juve either as relegation threatened side Empoli dumped them out of the Quarter Finals via a 2-4 penalty shootout win two weeks ago. All Juventus can focus their attention on now is the Serie A and the Serie A alone.
🚨 Thiago Motta could be sacked next week if Juventus lose to Fiorentina on Sunday. 🤯😬

Going from Paris to Turin, Randal Kolo Muani has been excellent since his January transfer window arrival. In the seven Serie A matches he’s featured in, the winger has found the back of the net fives time and even gotten himself an assist as well. Kolo Muani has managed to force talented European striker Dušan Vlahović out of the starting lineup in lieu of himself. The Serbian international has been no slouch this season either, providing 9 goals from the 22 domestic appearances he has.

Some other candidates that could help Juve find the back of the net more are midfielder Khéphren Thuram, son of Juventus legend Lilian Thuram. Following his father’s footstep, Khéphren has registered three goals and four assists this season, making a threat to the opposition defenders from the middle of the park. Another son of a former professional is Timothy Weah, son of AC Milan’s George Weah has been versatile in playing both wing-back and winger, matching Thuram’s seven contributions.
A good defence has been key to the success Juventus have achieved so goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio will need to carry on putting in the fantastic work he has been doing all season long. Over the course of 90 minutes, the AC Monza loanee has a save percentage of 68.6%, averaged 2.1 saves and conceded an average of 1 goal per match, the second best amongst all keepers in the Serie A.
With their best centre back in Bremer out all season with a cruciate ligament tear he picked up in the seventh game of the season, Juventus have been amazing at making sure that his absence is not sorely missed. Having to rotate Pierre Kalulu, Federico Gatti, Llyod Kelly and Renato Veiga has worked out just fine, working well with Michele Di Gregorio in-between the sticks.
In the 10 games that are left, Juventus will come up against opponents that average in 12th place. Some outliers in those fixtures are Fiorentina (their next match coming up on Sunday), AS Roma, Bologna and Lazio. Wins in these matches are crucial to Juventus as they can’t exclusively rely on the surrounding clubs to just drop off in form.
Fifth placed Lazio on the other hand have the pleasure of looking forward to opponents placed in an average of 9th/10th place. They will have to face tough sides like Bologna, Atalanta, AS Roma, Juventus and Inter Milan. Depending on how well the play versus Viktoria Plzen, they will have to contend with whoever they get drawn in the UEFA Europa League on top of the 10 remaining Serie A matches. The more games, the higher risk of injuries and a higher risk in completely losing all form when they need it the most.
🇮🇹 This is the BEST Serie A race of all time:

There’s a 6 point gap between 1st and 4th place.
In the modern era of the league it’s never been this right after 27 games.
• 58 - Inter
• 57 - Napoli
• 55 - Atalanta
• 52 - Juventus

Weighing up all the factors at play, it looks like Juventus could hold off those around them a keep their fourth place, securing them UEFA Champions League football for next season. The tough run of games that Lazio possess could see them struggle in putting up a fight domestically and the slightly easier fixture list Juventus have could let them go on another good spell like they were on before the thrashing they got handed to by Atalanta in their last match.
Juve had a five-game winning streak going into that game, including a massive win over Scudetto favourites Inter Milan. Their next game is against Fiorentina who were ahead of the Juventus for a while in the early part of the season but have since slipped down the standings a bit. It will still be a difficult game for them but if Juventus are able of show a resilient performance, there is a big chance they can seal their top four fate with some good momentum for the last 10 games.
