Larin Saves The Party In Toronto

Canada were held to a stalemate in the opening game of Group B at the Toronto Stadium. For a side that has never won a point in a FIFA World Cup, they were more than up for it in front of their electric home crowd.

This was by far the most end-to-end game of the World Cup thus far, and Canada were unfortunate to not grab all 3 points albeit due to a sturdy showing from the Bosnian backline.

Match Report

Canada began the game brightly with some early signs of intent from the home side. Unfortunately, they were unable to find the final pass on several occasions. As Canada failed to capitalise, Bosnia started mounting the pressure.

After the first 10 minutes, Bosnia eased their way into the game despite being on the backfoot, and ultimately the side won a corner in the 20th minute. Former Arsenal player Sead Kolašinac whipped a perfect ball into the penalty area which found the head of Amar Memic who nodded the ball towards the line, subsequently leading to Jovo Lukic pouncing on the loose ball to slot it home for Bosnia.

Now chasing the game despite looking the stronger side early on, Canada struggled to find an immediate response. However, it wasn't for the want of trying, as at the end of the first half, Canada had 8 shots to Bosnia's 5. Jesse Marsch's side may feel they were unlucky to not find an equaliser towards the end of the first half, but they lacked that final moment of quality in the final third too often.

Similarly to the beginning of the game, Canada opened the half with a point to prove. Within the first minute, Tajon Buchanan burst down the right flank with intent. In a calamitous string of events for the Bosnian defence, the ball found Buchanan's Villareal teammate Tani Oluwaseyi who managed to get a shot off which was saved by Nikola Vasilj.

Minutes later, Oluwaseyi and Vasilj met again, this time at the edge of the box as Vasilj met the striker in a clash of heads. Nothing came of the incident and play resumed, but the game began to stretch even more.

Bosnia had a chance to double their lead through Ermedin Demirovic who squandered a one-on-one opportunity with Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau. Bosnia continued to falter as minutes later Sead Kolašinac had a throw-in overturned for taking longer than 5 seconds to execute it.

As the game entered the hour mark, Jesse Marsch stepped up his approach and made 3 substitutions to try and influence the game in Canada's favour, Bosnia responded with 2 substitutions.

As the game returned to normality, Canada continued to push Bosnia as Oluwaseyi had a headed attempt pushed off the line by a Bosnian defender. Reaching the final 15 and the last hydration break, Canada continued their relentless push for salvation.

Canada continued to fight, this time bringing on Cyle Larin around the 75th minute. Quickly adapting to the game, Larin got on the end of a beautifully weighted flick by Promise David, took one touch to steady himself, and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to send Toronto into pandemonium.

The Bosnia captain put in a performance to be proud of tonight, attaining the assist for the opener, and putting in a solid defensive display.

The Juventus talisman was woeful in front of goal which led to him being substituted in the 61st minute.
