Charlton are Top? While Millwall get Stuffed - EFL Championship Round-Up MW3

The Championship was back this Saturday, and there were goals. Not one of the 11 matches played failed to produce a goal. There was drama, self-destruction and more. So, what happened this week in the EFL Championship?

Derby 0-3 Swansea

The first game of the weekend saw Derby get absolutely dismantled. They were outclassed on every level, and the scoreline backed this up.

The game was off to a quick start as Joseph Opoku would help Swansea take the lead after a fast break. Ji-Sung Eom would score the second from point-blank range. The game would finally be killed off in the 91st minute as Ronald Pereira would score.

Worrying times for Derby, who didn’t even have a shot on target all game.

Middlesbrough 3-1 West Bromwich Albion

This game was one of the slower starts but didn’t lack goals. It wasn’t until the 48th minute when the deadlock was broken. Will Lankshear would find himself on the end of a cross and head it home from close range.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan would level the game up in the 65th minute. However, Lankshear would have his second just eight minutes later. Then Alfie Jones would double the lead in the 87th minute.

Wolves 4-1 Stoke

Wolves have been flying so far, as you would expect, and this game was no different. What was different was that, after just two minutes, they were losing. Sam Gallagher would score a beautiful goal to help Stoke take the lead.

However, all that did was annoy Wolves, who would spend the next 88 minutes attacking. In the 20th and 23rd minutes, Rodrigo Gomes would score twice and push Wolves into the lead. Raul Jimenez would then slot a penalty away. Finally, Jordan James would score, making it 4-1.

Not the biggest turnaround this weekend, however, one that showed the firepower an ex-Premier League side can have.

Blackburn 1-2 QPR

One of the dark horses this season is back with another three points after a disappointing Matchweek 2.

The game was again a slow starter; it took 49 minutes before Ryoya Morishita would allow Blackburn to take the lead. It was a beautiful effort and was the difference for all of two minutes. Paul Smyth would get the game back on equal terms before Jimmy Dunne would win the game for QPR.

It’s another week and another goal that QPR have seen scored that has been unsavable. Is this the only way they will concede this season?

Bolton 0-1 Lincoln

The lowest-scoring game of the weekend. This game saw the only goal come in the 66th minute. It was a throw-in that found Ben House close to goal, who would head it in. That was all the difference they needed this week to take all three points.

Bristol City 2-1 Portsmouth

Back to the goals this weekend as we see another three added. The first would come in the 31st minute as Lorent Tolaj would convert after a fast break. It was a central chance that he managed to tuck into the top-right corner for 1-0.

Jason Knight would then get a chance from a corner that he made no mistake with. It was a clinical header that found the back of the net in the 56th minute for 2-0.

Portsmouth would get one back as Marezi would convert a penalty, but it was too little too late.

Cardiff 2-2 Sheffield United

The first draw of the weekend. This game was over and done with in the blink of an eye.

It is another game that saw the second minute bring a goal, as Jack Moylan would score. However, just three minutes later, in the fifth minute, Thomas Cannon would fire a penalty to level the score. Then, in the eighth minute, Callum O’Hare would allow Sheffield United to take the lead.

Finally, we got a breath for 30 minutes. Then Cian Ashford would start the goals again, making it 2-2. That seemed to be the end of all the energy, as no one else would be able to break the deadlock, and the game ended with both sides taking a point.

Charlton 1-0 Preston

The second game with just a single goal. However, Charlton won’t care less; they are top. That is all that matters now.

In the 56th minute, Karlan Grant would help Charlton take the lead, and that was a goal they would hang onto all game. It was enough for them to take home all three points and jump to the top of the league.

Will they be able to keep this up? Only time will tell.

Norwich 4-1 Burnley

Look away, Burnley. They have conceded seven goals in two games and have yet to win a game. As it stands, they will be going down. They need to really snap back into reality.

Norwich, like many sides this weekend, saw the memo. Once again, the second minute was when the first goal was scored. Mohamed Toure would score a well-taken shot. Then, just three minutes later, Andre Brooks would double the lead.

It looked like it couldn’t get worse, but that was until the 21st minute, when Toure would have his second, making it 3-0.

Josh Laurent would get one back but would receive a booking a minute later. Brooks would stop any momentum Burnley had as he would make it 4-1.

Then Mr Laurent would see his game ended with a second yellow card. One goal and two yellows, plus zero points, is an interesting day at the office.

It really is dark days for Burnley. Will they be able to find some form?

Southampton 5-1 Millwall

Stoke, you aren’t alone. Millwall also found out the difficult way that scoring first isn’t always best.

Mark Sykes would make the mistake as he allowed Millwall to take the lead after 15 minutes. Then it all fell apart.

Cyle Larin in the 25th minute. Finn Azaz in the 38th minute. That’s not too bad. It’s recoverable: 2-1 after the first 45.

Leo Scienza would score from the spot in the 55th minute. Larin would score again for 4-1, with the cherry on top being Tom Fellows for 5-1.

Stoke, you got away with a warning this week.

It will feel like a massive blow to Millwall after they started the season so well.

Watford 1-1 West Ham

Millwall lost, but at least their rivals didn’t win. West Ham look awful. No one looks like they actually want to be playing for them, excluding Bowen. Everyone else looks like they are just there to get a wage and go home.

After 19 minutes, West Ham were losing. Amin Nabizada would score a beautiful effort into the top corner of Hermansen’s goal. It took eight minutes for West Ham to respond. Or at least for the scoreline to say that.

Watford and Matthew Pollock would see the ball go in off him to make it 1-1, and that’s how it stayed.

West Ham are having an awful time. They don’t look like a relegated side. They look closer to a promoted side that is levels below the other teams in the league.

They will need to fix something in order to play Premier League football again next season.
