Southampton have had a £7 million package rejected for Charlton Athletic striker Micah Mbick.

The offer was reportedly worth £5 million up front plus another £2 million in add-ons, which is a significant bid for a 19-year-old who is still developing.

Charlton clearly do not want to sell him easily and appear to see Mbick as an important part of their future rather than somebody they are willing to cash in on quickly.

That could prove to be smart business. Southampton’s willingness to offer such a strong fee already shows how highly rated Mbick is, and Charlton may believe his value could rise considerably if he continues developing.

Mbick also raised his profile during his loan spell at Colchester, where he scored seven goals and gained important senior experience.
